nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
alrighty so since i have my new computer, ive been meaning to clear every thing off of my C drive on this old computer.. the only problem is that i don't know how.. yes im a noob at computers so spare me the embarrasment :o
thanks in advance.
do you want to back up the c drive or just clear off all the data? also what's the os of the old computer?
format c:
all joking aside,
I'm assuming you want a re-install of windows.
grab yourself a windows 2000/xp disk or a cd of your favorite os. Load it in your drive, then reboot. Follow the on-screen instructions, and make sure you re-format the drive.

just uninstall everything?
i can hook you up with xp pro if you want. uninstalling everything isn't my fav. solution because they can still leave files behind.
my recommendation is to pull all the data you need off of c and reinstall windows.

okay i have everything i want off of the c drive on my f drive now.. i have never reinstalled windows before.. i think we tried once at a lan and it somehow got all fucked up and wouldnt even install correctly.
why would he want to downgrade from windows 2000 to windows xp, db?
a. improved security
b. adobe cs2 won't accept anything less if he decides to run that on this machine.
c. i don't have a win2k cd (i can probably come up with one if it's needed though)
i really don't have a problem with xp when comparing it to 2k, sure the footprint is bigger with xp, but there are a lot more features. let me ask you this, why use 2k over xp?

i dont think im onna have ps on that computer, unless i am able to put it on more than one computer.. i'm not sure.
it doesnt really matter too much to me really. I use that computer now for file storage and a jukebox pretty much.
assumptions:
it's just internal, so you don't need the host based firewall.
no client programs, just serving files.
slower clock speed like below 800mhz
i'd recommend 2k if those are true. if not then i'd recommend xp pro.
do you have the 2k cd? if so i can come over and help you out.
> let me ask you this, why use 2k over xp?
uses less memory, less hard drive space. less bloated code. xp is generally slower across platforms. 2k will run better on older hardware. xp does not have significant improvements in features, and the drivers are often inferior.

i don't have a 2k cd.
actually a couple of sites i checked out were showing that as long as the machine was faster than something like 500mhz xp out performed 2k, not by much though.
xp has a number of significant feature improvements, here's a short list: Shadow Copy Integration with Backup, Last Known Good Configuration, Automated System Recovery, System Restore Enhancements, Error Messaging and Product Support, Online Crash Analysis, Shutdown Event Tracker, Windows Driver Protection, Device Driver Rollback, not to mention it still receives security and feature patches.
xp is larger than 2k but i can't say it's ever become an issue for me since ram is pretty cheap these days.
and as for the driver issue, i'll just quote microsoft on this one
"The driver models are largely unchanged from Windows 2000, so most of the devices that worked with Windows 2000 will work with Windows XP without loading a new device driver." the source is the microsoft website.
that said, i don't mind 2k. it's just that i run cs2 and adobe limits that software to xp and above.
one correction:
driver rollback was available in 2000 under safe mode.
2k has lkgc, and it has been widely noted (re: pc world et al.) that support for many multimedia devices (e.g. scanners) is better under 98se than xp.
do you have a 2k cd or know somewhere i could get one for andy p?
this post has been archived.
i just realized i have a copy. andy p, the offer still stands.

alright i think i want to try putting windows xp on the mac.. im not sure if 2k will work on it, but i still would like it to reinstall on my old computer as well. i dont think i have your number db, do you have mine?
negative, mine is 698-8110.
i've got a friend in my net. sec. class that rocks the dual boot on his powerbook. it's pretty cool although he has some driver issues including (but not confined to) the wireless card. something to keep in mind is apple is trying to make xp programs run natively in osx as an upcoming feature. also wine might be something to look into for limited windows interoperability. now if it's just for the novelty of it, rock that shit.

yeah a kid in my photo class just got xp running on his macbook and it looks pretty good. he says that cs:s runs pretty good, a little choppy when there is action, but that was at the highest settings. the applications run hella fast on it.
