this is kind of embarassing..
so i needed a crack and went to cracks.am and got it. i had to install some firefox plugin to download the crack.
alas

the thing that pisses me off is that this site ^^^ is run by mcafee. i was running mcafee antivirus when i downloaded and installed this trojan. why didn't it do anything?!
lesson: stick to the rule of avoiding untrusted websites. duh.
mcafee antivirus, adaware, and spybot will not remove this trojan! i see my drive littered with weird programs in weird places:
C:\Documents and Settings\lucas\Application Data\antecurb\69F17AB4
C:\Documents and Settings\lucas\Application Data\antecurb\hold rdr frag.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\lucas\Application Data\antecurb\Mediaroaddrv.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\lucas\Application Data\antecurb\ysdodsrb.exe
C:\23990098.$$$
C:\AVPCallback.log
...
i'm looking at a clean install here. and i just installed windows today. sigh.
oh, and i have some really cool internet explorer processes using 50-150mb of ram.

the law is no protection
one time at my old job I was doing a fresh install of XP on someone's peecee, and they wanted me to install Norton Antivirus from a CD that they gave me, but they had lost the piece of paper with the key on it. so after installing XP - and before doing Windows Update - I merrily surfed to astalavista.box.sk with Internet Explorer. lo and behold, I got some kind of virus that I couldn't fix and had to reinstall XP again.
lesson learned!

Well on the way to the unknown
This is probably a sillyquestion, but are you in safe mode without networking? You should be able to delete them manually if nothing else works.
I deleted hh.exe thinking it was connected to my popups. Imagine my surprise when my ebooks wouldn't open anymore. I have also screwed up my One Touch controls. About time for a reinstall I think.
the worst that i ever got was before i ran an antivirus something got installed and anytime i tried to run an exe from the run prompt without explicitly defining the exe extention (such as cmd, notepad, calc) a similarly named .com file would step in and run in place of the program i was going for. sometimes the exe would end up getting run but othertimes it would just sit with this blank dos prompt. one reinstall later and i do a full system scan every other day.

well i can delete them, i just don't know where all of them are. i found some crap, but i don't have time to look through the entire system.
finally back on a clean install.. only took a few hours to get it how i like it:

i got rid of access connections on my x60
and that battery thing. 1024x768 needs as much taskbar as possible with my huge quicklaunch
wow.. the only three thinkvantage technologies i use are active protection system, power manager, and access connections. i think they are all great.
i use active protection and power manager.
and that fingerprint thing. its a nice novelty for when your hands are full for login.
