there goes my savings!
i havent decided whether i will run a bsd or a linux primarily. any comments?
what is it for?
it's my main desktop. i will use it for playing around, surfing, office applications, movies, music.
i will probably have a little xp partition for games.
pretty intense.. i don't know. i think netbsd/openbsd are fun. freebsd isn't clean enough for my tastes.
actually, i'm getting a 7900gs for cdn$40 more.
I'm going to one-up Net! It just works so perfectly on my desktop. No complaints. Open would probably be pretty close, but I'd rather drop it on a server.
pretty sweet setup, hopefully that stuff all works well with whatever OS you choose!
what's the end cost, approx?
prolly around $1000, because I'm recycling the hard drives, a nice case, fans, and heatsink, and the pci raid card.
i'm working on getting gentoo installed right now. it's very time consuming.
after that i'm thinking either netbsd or lfs... lfs is in the lead right now.

Well on the way to the unknown
If you think gentoo is time consuming, lfs is not a good choice. It takes me almost 24hrs to just install. Granted I never got jalfs to work. If you get that working it would be easy.
these wouldn't be production machines by any means. just life experience. i kinda want an os that forces me to get dirty and in under the hood. hence gentoo as an "intro course".
It's all set up, still waiting on my RAM though... damn postal monopolies in this modern era.
I think I'm going to go for Debian etch amd64.
> postal monopolies in this modern era
depends where you are
u.k.'s post is privatized and the u.s.p.s. is virtually privatized. but i don't think anyone ships packages via u.s.p.s. here.. it's all about the fedex/dhl/ups.

usps priority mail ain't bad. I've used it a couple of times before and it's always been fairly cheap and arrived in the time they claimed it would (2-3 business days).
yeah, i'm from canada.
i paid $15 for purolator air (two days) from BC to ontario and i paid $15 for canada post expedited parcel from BC to ontario and it is taking seven.
woot postal monopoly delivers! class is in the way of flashing bios and rockin out.
