so I had an iMac 20" that i just sold and now am going to get a new computer. i'm thinking i'm going to get a thinkpad. my new job at microsoft will most likely require me to have a laptop, so i assume just get it now instead of getting screwed later. anyway... here's what i'm looking at.
thinkpad t60
$1,224.00
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.0GHz, 4MB L2, 667MHz FSB)
14.1 SXGA+ (1440)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 128MB
1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Integrated fingerprint reader
60GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
for a thinkpad t series that seems cheap to me. im going with the 14" screen over the 15". its smaller w/ same resolution and way cheaper. i would still prefer it if it were the same price though, i think, just for size. the downside is that i hear the 15" is a nicer screen, but that may be subjective.. i don't know.
any thoughts? any other laptop recommendations? i dont really like anything other than the thinkpads that i've seen. no macbook mb/pro's for me. i was looking at the x series that lucas and dp have... I really like it, but i cant handle 1024x768. also, i will be using it at home and work as my primary machine (athough i think i will have an additional desktop at work) so i need the extra speed. also, i dont care about the wait since i will only be taking it between 2 places.

why no macbook? just curious :). great screen size, great resolution, and great price! those are the three main things that sold me on it. and I wanted a solid desktop OS that I didn't have to mess around with at all. I can understand not wanting to use OS X though.
the 14.1" sxga+ 1440px is a great lcd.. i don't know about the 15" being better, but i know you'll be happy with the 14.1". plus you get a smaller laptop as a result.
the 1024px on the x60s almost made me get the t60.
there's lots of info on forum.thinkpads.com, fyi.

asemi,
i've had a few macs (ibook/700 - dualG4/867 - powerbook 15" - intel imac 20") and i'm just tired of them at the moment. I have phases with them. i got the imac to be the "be all, end all" for me. so i could have all my stuff in one place and not have to screw with it. it just worked when i needed it and it was just a nice box... then i got bored. :) i like to screw around with computers from time to time...
Plus, like i said earlier, i just got a new job a microsoft and i dont see them really thinking its a great idea to bring a macbook to work :).
Lucas - thats was exactly what i was hoping to hear about the screen.

oh yeah, I forgot about the job with Microsoft part :).
I have my server to tinker around with, so I get my fill of tinkering there. it's nice to have a workstation that just works. and I still get to tinker around with different apps for it. just not so much hardware tinkering.
I considered the thinkpads for a short time, but their price prevented me from buying any of them :/.
btw, what are ya doing at M$ maple ? :) Just curiuos ?

not totally sure yet. i know i'll mainly be doing work in the datacenter in the beginning. streamlining processes and automation. and learning as much as possible. lots of smart people there. i think ill be the youngest person, but not by much though. its a fairly small facility (~100 people).
not sure which direction i will grow or what direction they want me to grow in. they know i'm a unix guy though. its definitely cool over there. they are just totally normal dudes. not corporate style at all. just hackers. way different vibe than you would expect. my education doesnt look all that great on paper, so i'm trying to make it up via experience and working as a key person on a ms datacenter isn't a bad way to do it, i think

A friend of mine's brother works up at M$ ... you must have gotten off lucky, he's stuck in a total corporate entity. Though they did recruit him out of high school, so I guess they're assimilating him.

yeah this is a technology center. they work on projects with clients and work with new technology and what not. i had done some work there as a client and it was great.
