so here's the plotline up to right now...
i have been contracted to migrate q2 from an 4.0 server with post office pro for email to 2003 with an exchange server. other services are planned but for now active directory is the primary focus for me.
they had previously contracted some company to set it up, but something happened and they're gone... the only problem is that they set up the server themselves and i'm put in the middle of what they were doing, over 2 years ago.
i have no way of contacting them for info as to where they were so i'm just going to reinstall 2k3 and go from scratch. as i speak, i'm attempting to reinstall, the only issue is server isn't recognizing the raid array so no disks are present to install to. the floppy i was using to hand over some drivers is now corrupt and it's causing a major issue.
basically i've accepted this is going to be an all nighter that takes me right into my 4 am shift tomorrow and that will take me to school at 8 am till about 7 pm.
when you get down to it, i just wanted to vent about this bitch.
oh yeah, and the laptop that i'm using as an internet refrence, management console, and basic entertainment for during the install has apparantly stopped recognizing the touchpad, so no mouse there.
i'm off to find a floppy!
2k3 installed w/ sp1, update services running now.
i'm also updating the laptop and hopefully a restart fixes the mouse issue as i may go crazy without one, esp in xp.
pirates of silicon valley on right now and wargames is up next!
and now the touchpad works again!
dcpromoed, and exchange is installed w/ sp1+2

yay! go dbrown!
shit gets difficult when migrating passwords though.
trusts - established
pwkey.pem file - created
now i just need to install it on the nt machine, get the dlls for admt on the nt machine and migrate the fuck out of all users.
btw: the sql server was down for bit there. also there was a hit and run across the street, during installs i watched shit go down.
pw migration as well as user migration is bulletproof as far as i can see, should work on friday when i implement in full scale.
just copying fileshares, profiles, etc... across. then setting up printers.
after that it's simple admin stuff (creating shared folders, calenders, etc) in exchange. then payday.
not bad given the timeline and previous experience with this.
ahhhh, just crossed the 14 hrs straight barrier and i think i'm ready to go home for the day.
Final tally:
Installed 2k3, service packed up and everything
Promoted to DC
Installed exchange2k3, service packed up
Setup trusts and installations required for user migration
Tested multiple users in diff. scenarios for migration and worked out bugs
Discussed, designed, and implemented filesystem structure
Migrated a majority of fileshares to new server
Figured out (mostly) how the email system works here
all that's left is to migrate the accounts (friday), figure out how to and test implement the email to our real external relays (possibly tonight after some sleep), and get my muthafuckin movie check!
lol nuts db.

Don't Let Your Walls Down
haha way to keep up luke!
damn, crazy stress today. the mail relay people we're using are assholes, basically they've got two responces to any questions you might have:
1. We don't handle any server side questions/issues you might have.
2. You have our ultimate package right? good, good.
so i'm calling out to you, ttf, to help me.
the issue:
i have two servers running email services. one (current production) has a cgi based setup that serves to users using pop3, it is presently receiving email from our exterior relay. the other is exchange 2k3 that i just installed and is out of the loop as far as our exterior relay is concerned. i need a way to migrate users dept by dept to the new server (hopefully over the course of a week), but our external relay service provider refuses to put more than one server on their list to relay to (in parallel, they'll put the new server on a failover list).
migrating about 15gb of profile information right now and the best part is since i'm implementing quotas on combined user profile and network fileshare size, i get to go in by hand and change the owner on every folder, that's 106 if anyone's counting... i know, i know, scripting right? well i can't seem to get any of the command line or cscript stuff to work so it's gui for me!
ok, i found the command line utility i need, i just suck at scripting. long story short, i built the equivalent of a batch file that has one line per user, but i'm done with it so that's good.
p.s. sorry these posts suck, but it's all i can do to maintain my sanity.
bam! i needed to unplug for like 3 days to regain sanity and shower. i'm back in here and i figured out a workaround for most of my profile problems (permissions, ownership, etc...) so i figure push the domain migration out over the weekend with more testing and exchange will have to wait. so i'm having a great time, nice and easy... right?
no
the current live server took a shit and dumped the hdd with user profiles and data on it...
so now i go live in one hour and i'm desperately migrating files to the new server since the permissions don't cross forests into the nt4 domain (nt has no concept of cross-forest trust).
happy birthday to me!
oh and i put in an app for geek squad today.
and then my workaround didn't work around shit. ugh.
so.. did you get it all working spiffy yet?
neg. i'll post what happened probably tomorrow during np. hopefully the main migration will happen on fri. as for the exchange migration... it remains to be seen, the firewall isn't playing nice.
