it's the most disgusting presentation of a power struggle between societal morality and individuals.

why would you watch this? to see the predator be tortured with guilt? to revile in disgust--and yet enjoy it?

this encompasses most of what is wrong with this world--punishment hungry fools filled with resentment.

playing to the id in people will always be more profitable than playing to the superego.

the problem is... not playing to the superego will ultimately not be profitable to society.

Well, as long as there is a righteous game of candy land involved, count me in.

I actually wrote about "to catch a predator" in my analog journal.

"To catch a predator is on. Something is unsettling about the methodology. It is interesting to see the breadth of predator sexual attraction though. The unsettling part is that NBC makes this in co-op with MSNBC. This sort of honeynet operation of deception is only the lesser of two evils. Going out of the way to convict horny guys because of a 'supposed' age? Who ever knows of the age is true online? Protecting children is important, but lies are lies. Some of these people on the show could really be dangerous. Oh well, TV sensationalism sucks. The show will be a family crowd pleaser but brings a new twist of voyeurism closer to public view. All said, the show and all the people on it, with the exception of the cops, are horrible for their own reasons." - 12:27am 7/6/07

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
This brings to mind a conversation I had with my former roommate: Is it legal to arrest these people for wanting to possibly do something with a child?

1) They solicited adults posing as children.

Side note: Some studies I've read say that almost all people targeted as "predators" asked the online enforcer to leave them alone.

2) No crime was actually committed. The "predators" were arrested before they could do anything, or come into direct contact with children.

It's like arresting me because when I was cut off and followed home by a truck, my wanting to run it off the road counts as assault with a deadly weapon. It doesn't stick. It becomes like PKD's The Minority Report.

well i mean when the guy shows up with a tube of lube theres obviously intent, and when they show up and talk to the girl about having sex with them its the same thing. For the guys who showed up and never got a word in or never said any of those things in person shouldn't be tried be all you have are chat logs and it's nearly impossible to tell who's really on the other end or if they are really serious. granted, just showing up does show a slight seriousness.

Yes, there's no denying that--but it's still just intent. But I'm sure there's a law about that they can prosecute him or her with.

That's like saying I should get arrested because I walk into a liquor store with the "intent" of robbing it when all I want is a bottle of patron and I have a gun in the car.

I've always seen what they do as entrapment but I'm probably not very clear on what exactly entrapment entails so I'm probably wrong.
