which do you prefer and why?

example: amazon sells the paperback edition of the unbearable lightness of being for $11, while the hardcover is only $16. i don't know which to get.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
i like to be able to bend the cover back and hold my books with one hand from the side. sometimes i fall asleep reading and the hard cover ones can hurt if you sleep on them wrong :)

I prefer paper back

I like paperback although my copy of The Fountainhead looks like the worst book I own because it's missing the cover and the perfect binding glue failed miserably. It's held together with packaging tape and no cover these days with writing on it :p

I don't mind hardcover but I don't have many fiction texts in hard -- like two?

oops I forgot about the why. Hard is nice because generally it ages better, although in larger hardback texts the pages sag on the spine after a while. There isn't some special reason I feel the need to hate hard back either, I just prefer holding a lighter paperback and flip those pages than to hold up a bit heavier book. Possibly reading a hardback book on a table would be more enjoyable as you might be able to lay it out flat and read that way without holding it, except probably the pages if they are stiff and fresh.

I like to think of them as equally good, just different.

Some paperbacks are really cheaply designed and assembled- some are *very* well done (for instance Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst is beautiful). However in general hardcovers are more aesthetically pleasing but physically harder to read. I find hardcover tough to read in bed and especially hard to travel with. Hardcover makes a home read- but I can bring a paperback to school/work.

the law is no protection
I prefer hardcover because it typically stays open better. I like this because I like to read while I'm eating a lot and holding a smallish paperback open with one hand and eating with the other kind of sucks.

hardcover doesn't turn yellow over time and fall apart... usually.

i'm a paperback guy personally, easier to read because of foldability.

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Hardback. Breaking the spines of books makes me angry.
