I disagree with your dislike of HDR. It's obviously easy, and the results are non-realisitic. But in terms of taking advantage of light it's basically 3 fold complexity on the shot to achieve a greater depth of visualization. I think it's not only a valid method for photography it can make or break a shot if done well / poorly or not at all.

Actually, crafting a fine HDR image is not easy. The point is to retain detail (while maintaining natural-looking contrast) without making the viewer feel something about the image looks strange.

a 2-3 stop exposure latitude is fairly realistic--quite a few films have that latitude. but anything more than that is pretty silly looking.

In comparison to the earlier photos, that one is "decent". But yeah, the leaves in the upper left corner look pretty ghastly when enlarged. I think the note area looks alright.

i think computers make possible especially terrible juxtapositions of colors. it's not as easy with painting. i've never looked at a painting that made my "eyes vomit."

Of course it's fake, the whole picture is so dark you can hardly see the colors, and then you have these very bright balloons in the middle ...
Why does it matter if it's fake?
i think it's real... some balloons have thin skins and allow more light in than others. the photo is dark because the sun is coming in from the background, silhouetting the figures, but not the balloons (because they allow light in).

i cant exactly explain why i hate, rather than simply dislike this genre. at least part of it is due to what i think is the sheer ugliness of it. but also, i think its trying too hard to be imaginative, when in fact its not imaginative at all. i mean, look at that guy. he nailed a few fake brass furniture tacks from economy hardware into a piece of walnut and got a dragon necklace from a booth at the mall and im supposed to think hes some sort of mad anachronistic genius? i would be somewhat impressed, at least, if steampunk were all about actually making stuff that WORKS out of brass and dials excess gearing. but instead its all about, like, gluing beads and veneer to your PC tower and wearing granny glasses. in short, its like a fantasy world for people who apparently dont feel like putting in the effort, and whats more its really not dazzling or even interesting to me and thus i feel derision is in order.
Steampunk is not about "dressing up", there are quite a few "steampunk" books, stories, and computer games.

My favorite flickr contact is reesie. She photographs the details of her life and describes them in a way that has made me fall in love with her. She is also a fantastic writer, I think, and often attaches small works of fiction to her images. The only way I can tell when they are fiction is by reading her tags, however, as some of them are also real.
