afaik monetary unions take some serious fine-tuning... problem in NA is that Canada is decoupling from the US economy and we are structurally very different.

there's no way we'd give up and control of the money supply that our country uses
and it's probably a bad idea. what's the point of a shared currency, anyway? facilitated trade? we do pretty well, anyway. i don't know what conversion costs are per transaction, though.

if we did that would it even be able to compete with the euro? or even the pound?
depends what you mean by compete... countries have been moving towards putting their currency reserves in euro and moving away from USD in the last few years.
I say the US should annex Mexico.

NAFTA is supposed to be make trade easier for us. When you consider that the Canadian and US Dollar are on par with each other, it is pretty pointless for a shared currency.
We will never be able to compete with the Euro. At least when we spend billions on Iraq.
Europe has a declining population and as the middle east collapses further into instability they will suffer more than we will. So eventually we should come right back to the top.
You know I find that so fascinating that Europe has a declining population(death rate exceeds birth rate). Is birth control easily obtainable?
