I have a stack of pens that I've ad hoc gathered for sporadic use. I put the shitty ones in a bag to redistribute every few days at work for people needing quick notes.
The number 2 has resurfaced for me along with sharpening with a knife (sog flash II & leatherman squirt p4).

stringy ink? nah, they're not that bad.
trust me, plenty of the crap I write down to look like I'm taking notes in bad classes is not worth the ink from my Zebra.

i'm planning on buying an orange lamy safari (medium nib - blue/black, haven't decided) in the next few weeks.
I loved my Lamy (had the Vista ... which is basically the clear Safari) ... good luck!

I've got an Al-star with an extra fine nib. Still pretty wide. But it's good, so go for it!
Al-star looks nice but I really like the design on the Safari.

I'm a big fan of the Lamy Safari/Vista series with an XF nib. Best general purpose pen ever.
i've been using a charcoal F nib safari for the last year or so. i have a heavy hand so the XF might be better for me.
That's why I use the XF. F/M nibs just spits out too much ink for me to handle. Similar line thickness as a Pilot Precise V5 (my preferred disposable pen), if that helps you out any.
maybe i'll get one of these. suggestions on inks (and where to buy ink)?
phi > i've never used the precise V5, but i've used the varsity (think that's the UK version... or the other way around)
lucas > you should get one - they are very cheap. i like blue-black ink as it stands out on the page vs black ink but it isn't too bright. i work in a very conservative environment though, so don't listen to me

I use Waterman black in my EF AL-Star. It's nice and black. Nothing fancy.

I use the Waterman Havana Brown ink (best used on white paper, natch) ... I like it. But the only other ink I've used was some Visconti and I found it too thin for most applications. Bled like mad.
I've heard very nice things about J. Herbin (sp?) inks from a few people, but no personal experience.

nestor: I agree. Blue-black is a great "formal" (work, school, etc) color to work with. I used that in my Conklin before it bit the dust/pavement.
for the record, i use indigo blue produced by de atramentis but licensed by a local shop here in toronto.
i received a white al-star (EF) in the mail today. went to the pen store and reviewed a lot of inks. i loved the j. herbin 1670 hematite but it takes ~15 seconds to dry. i went with the waterman south sea blue - it's a classic turquoise that dries quickly and exhibits some good shading.
Ordered:
2x - Clairefontaine staple-bound, ruled 8.25"x11.75" notebooks

I miss my Vista ... it got flushed down a toilet at my old job (stupid story) and there was no P-trap, so my pen went straight into the mains. :(
would you have really recovered a pen from a toilet p-trap? even sink p-traps are disgusting
