I have two folders, one for downloaded stuff and one for personally encoded stuff. I rip with LAME 3.97 with vbr-new and -V 0. I don't bother tagging and organizing downloaded stuff, but ripped stuff is Artist/Album (Year)/Track - Title.
I used to be a lot more crazy about tagging stuff I downloaded. ever since I got into buying CDs I ditched that, though.

i have 600 downloaded albums and 60 ripped albums. and i find my downloaded collection unmanageable. because it comes from a variety of sources, it varies in terms of encoding quality, completeness, tagging, and filenames. i don't know what to do with myself.
i must have whole albums. thats about the only requirements. and actually i usually like to get the entire discography of an artist
i'm with chiken, although for me it starts:
1. if i like a song, i get the whole album
2. if i like the album, i go for the discography
3. delete the albums i don't jive with

if you've got an Oink account you could download all of the albums in a lossless format and encode them to MP3 yourself :).

i think i'll FLAC all of my CDs then seriously get rid of them all.

well yeah you obviously couldn't download all that stuff in one shot, but it's a good, reliable source for lossless rips.
