gatzby might be lovin' that dp is using this phone as a test pilot for switching over to a gsm carrier to eventually use with an e61i.
don't kill me larz! I can't even use it without a sim.
my dad is going to send me a prepaid sim from germany. Apparently one of the larger sim manufacturers is a company called "Giesecke & Devrient" and they make some interesting smart sim cards for particular purposes.
http://www.gi-de.com/ check out the (U)SIM cards. I don't think there's an easy way to buy a single sim straight from the company because they're pretty big and I think they use resellers.
another sucky option from a north american perspective is that it's difficult to get a sim card from the main carriers here. I've seen them online but many are dated so i'm hesitant to invest if i cannot get my sim activated. the set-up is that you buy a "prepaid" phone with probably a sim locked into it, but i don't want/need to buy a prepaid phone, i just want a sim.
So the realistic solutions are: buy a prepaid sim or pay through a local carrier that grips my balls with contracts.
verizon's phones suck. if they were gsm I would stick with them.
wow, i completely fail to understand cellphone technology.
the phone has the antenna and radio tuned in to certain frequencies and are generally labeled according to their geographic location of operation and simplified: GSM 850 / 1900 mhz for the Americas or GSM 900 / 1800 mhz for Europe. Those are dual bands but there are tri and quad bands too for some other areas in the world. CDMA is a bit of a simplification also, it's a cover label for phones that use a different method of achieving access to these frequencies and sending data.
Overall there's 'gsm' and 'cdma' phones. Unfortunately here in the states there are huge carrier companies who are driven by contracts of approx 2 years of guaranteed service.
and i'm not sure what to think of our northern neighbors, what with their blue berries, whatever that insinuates. RIM needs to innovate because email just aint enuf.
haha i sort of followed the first paragraph but not really.
wireless revenues in canada are hugely driven by contracts. some of the monthly fees would make you cringe.
and yeah, blackberries are all the rage on Bay street... not sure if people use them in the US
yeah they use the blackberries here
and i'm not sure about cringing just yet, how much are you paying exactly?
ok I think I'm ready to test a sim card finally. I'm going to go buy one this week!

actually it was in portugal, to this sketchy mofo on the streets as a reward for not killing us and/or stealing our organs!
it was deadweight at that point, this lady at t-mobile on base in kaiserslautern tried putting a sim card from t-mobile in it and nothing happened so she said my phone was hardwired for a different carrier, that carrier may have been vodafone, but I didn't check. so I think the 'unlocked' selling point was a fraud :(
dc likes tigerdirect too
oh that's right, fuck that place.
