I found this here, it my provide some hints:
"In the case of words such as ‘ήλιοι’, the situation can be tricky, though, because in some words one of the /i/ vowels stand for a full vowel ([ i ]), while in others it stands for a semivowel ([j]). In the specific case of ‘ήλιοι’ I think the <ι> stands for a semivowel, and so <ιοι> would be read as [ji]; however, this [j] palatalises the previous <λ>, and so the whole word is read as [ˈiʎi]. "
