whats the suggested retail and release date? I remember looking at this one a long time ago and that hadn't been released at that time.
i think it's $479. the n800 is about the same (except without a gps and a qwerty keyboard) for $258 on amazon.
they both run linux; they have tons of apps, wifi, bluetooth, sd slot (the n800 has two!); they run a stripped down skype...
woo

oh damn gatzby showed me this a week or so ago. looks so slick.
you can also use the gizmo project larz:

(works on N800, possibly N810 too!)
Nokia 770? even cheaper than the N800.
so using skype on an n810 on my college campus isn't possible.
my laptop got blacklisted for using skype on their wifi here. :(
game over.

uh, run the skype packets through an ssh tunnel to my server?
duh
i'm worried about the connectivity and speed if that's the only way you can do it.
maybe find a returnable n810 :)
> i'm worried about the connectivity and speed if that's the only way you can do it.
my school gives you access to all of their bandwidth when you authenticate with credentials on wifi. this means internet2 (http://www.internet2.edu/) peering and access to all of our pipes.
and my server is fast and has good network connectivity as well.
so i don't think it will hold anything back. voice only on skype doesn't use much bandwidth (~10kbps).
i just meant on the phone side
meaning the phone will make the ssh slow? or what?
well, skype for the nokia tablets has proxy support. and you can run ssh on them as well. so i don't see why it wouldn't work.
skype rates:
$30/year for unlimited skypeout
$3/month for skype pro
$30/year for a skypein number
so $60/year + $3/month, or $8/month on average.
that's a pretty cheap mobile phone. sure, only works in hotspots, but i'm in one 90% of the time.
the quality of ssh-tunneled skype on my x60s is mixed. but it's usually fine.
so, does one purchase the n800 or the n810?
i just think skypes bandwidth usage on the phone plus the ssh overhead could make for some slow calls that's all
oh. well it hasn't been, really. my success has been about the same as skype without ssh tunneling.
like i said, skype uses under 10kbps for voice. considering i can stream 256kbps at school from my server, it's a non-issue.
