I'm going to change the context of the discussion while staying true to the title.

text messaging
I have been out of the text messaging loop for quite a while. I have a few excuses for doing so.

a. I dislike typing responses on a number pad.
b. Cost for (privilege of) text messaging is a joke, it requires less bandwidth than voice and charge big.
c. Organizing the messages to respond to (current phone) sucks.
d. Mass texts are obtrusive and annoying.

I've been told by numerous people that they can't contact me (assumptions of texts) and I have had generally disdainful reactions. Maybe it is hard to remember inconsistencies like mine. I have missed a slew of entertainment options from mass messaged party/going-out invites.

I have a two questions regarding text messaging:

1. Is it worth the cost?
2. What sort of plan are you on, with which carrier?

mobile
I really want a Nokia E61i, but I know I dislike AT&T's service. I can't bring myself to join them again. I like Verizon for the most part, except their phone selection. I just moved into my room in San Jose. My roommate who I just met, said she text'd (yes, a neocontractionary) me about inviting me to eat downstairs. I think this was the tipping point.

I've been looking into which phone I want. If I stick with Verizon, which seems reasonable right now, I think I'll make the plunge with a smart phone. The one I've been looking at is the Samsung SCH-i760. It runs Windows Mobile. lr advises against the Windows Mobile OS, but I can't recall why just now.

I would stick with a regular non-data plan, and utilize the wifi for any email purposes. I want to keep monthly costs down. Right now I pay about $45/mo., 450 minutes anytime, unlimited Verizon calling, text message block. I can get the phone for about $350 and stick with my plan with tacked on text messaging for probably around $55.

so I bought it :x

I think I am having buyers remorse right now. I'll see how I feel when I get it later this week.

the law is no protection
which one?

why not get an unlocked Nokia? or is that more expensive?

have you looked at Helios? I'm going to consider them when my T-Mobile contract is up.

1. I think text messaging is worth the cost. it's handy for situations when I can't talk, such as in the library or at work.
2. I pay five dollars/month for 500 messages (text, picture, video, audio, whatever).

typing on the number pad does suck, but oh well.

ugh, bmt really irritates me in the sense that i'm locked into verizon for the most part (there are other carriers but their rates suck)...

@asemi: i actually enjoy the number pad because i've gotten pretty quick with it (not sure how to feel about that)

I bought the Samsung SCH-i760. I didn't go for the Nokia because I would have to join AT&T for service. Also it's still an expensive phone and it's not as new. I haven't looked at Helios, but I am aware they exist.
