this one has always gotten to me:

so many things about it. it simultaneously shows the horror of racism in Nazi Germany and the hopeful image of racial equality in the United States.
look a little deeper though, and you can see the hypocrisy of the US and the sad truth behind the false image of equality. Jesse Owens was treated horribly in the US because he was Black; wasn't recognized for his accomplishments at the Berlin Olympic Games and was subject to whatever other mistreatment and short-changing went along with being Black in the early-middle 20th century US.
this image is powerful to me because it simultaneously displays the amazing hope and dream of racial equity in our country and the horrible reality of racialized mistreatment. it really evokes some US pride in me because I think for all of its faults the US can be a really hopeful place and has the potential to be a beautiful place if everyone would realize the origin and existence of race as a social construction and work to create equal opportunity and treatment for all (and sometimes this means racially focusing our solutions while simultaneously knowing that race is nothing more than a social construction.).
but it makes me sad at the same time because racial reality has never jibed with racial equality rhetoric. the history of racism in our country is disgusting and it persists to this day. I wish we could all come to a basic common understanding of this insanely complex problem and focus our energy on analyzing the best solutions to persistent problems, but that day seems far away to me.
that ended up being a lot longer than I had originally planned.

guess this was more about race than powerful images :). that image is what sparked it, though.
yep, I came across that one a few times while looking for the one I posted.
cool that San Jose State built a statue in their honor.
