I know this is probably a long shot but I was wondering if anyone on here possibly had a decent server around that they were willing to sell.

well basically we are looking to do a 32 man tf2 server. since finding a company to supply a 32 man server is extremely hard and expensive we found out it would be cheaper to buy our own server then send it to a company and have them host it for us.

honestly, i'd go 24. 32 mans are sluggish.
and most folks rent server space for games. a single server can handle multiple instances of tf2, it's definitely cheaper to rent a gameserver for tf2 than it is to set your own up.
yeah we found a site that actually offers 32 man servers so we are going to get a 32 man 100 tic 500fps server located in either dallas or LA. its going to be $125 a month for the dallas one and $150 for the LA one. the only reason we would get the LA one is because the majority of the people in the clan are from the west coast.
and we want to go with a 32 man because we dont want to pay the money and have it never get used, which is a huge possibility with a 24 man. with a 32 man we will see more full server time and get the most out of what we will be paying. also the provider we are going with is pretty good, i tested out one of their server and it didn't seem sluggish to me at all
dallas will ping marginally well to east coast. la will not.
yeah as a guy from NY posted. he got like a 40 ping to dallas and even 58 to seattle but when he did a ping to LA he got like 128.

Oh it's crap. They dumped a release candidate out to make it in time for xmas. It's broken to hell. And the gametype I really enjoyed ( Onslaught ) is pretty much destroyed and unplayable.

what did they fuck up on onslaught? that was the game type i used to always play from 2k3
weapons and gfx look nice, but I expect more from being away from gaming so long.

they dumbed the game down, made all the spammy weapons over powered, then unbalanced the vehicles. and then hired the worlds worst map designers. did no bug removal... and dumped it out as a product.

alright our tf2 server is up and running. we got a 32 man server based in dallas that is performing extremely well. i can get pings as low as 50 and a guy from NY in our clan is pulling 30's to 40's. Anyways the IP is 74.86.251.108:27015 and we have been keeping a full server majority of the time as long as server updates dont come out! swing by and have some fun!
building a file server in the next couple weeks. i want to re-do my whole home computing setup, my desktop pc needs to become more of a workstation and strip out all the file serving functions it currently has.
debating between a smaller mini itx case (~6 drives, or 3 raid 1) vs. a monster 16 drive case that will theoretically give me more of a runway and not require a big case upgrade. i could be adding 1.5-3TB / year (likely to inflate over time), and being cost effective today means 3TB drives (also, likely to inflate over time).
the former option gives me 2-5 years of runway, while the latter is more "theoretically" future proofed, with more like 7-15 years.

honestly i think when my desktop gives up it's usefulness i may just give up on having a desktop in the apt.

I'm going the same route as nny. I plan to colo one of my machines. I just bought a PCI-X SSD for it for I'm getting insanely fast write speeds. This thing belongs in a DC. After that, I will get a laptop. Macbook Retina.
