sadly, one of the biggest selling points for me was that it has a mini-usb port. i already use a usb-to-mini-usb cable for many devices, so this is another one.
a huge part of the reason that i bought the canon sd750 was because it uses sd and my laptop has an sd slot. my previous camera was cf so i had to pack a card reader. :(
granted, the env uses microsd, but i only have sd cards, and lg uses all of those terrible proprietary connectors. no thanks. :(

the w385 was a big mistake. i now have 123 test messages sitting on it that i need to backup. and bitpim doesn't support reading them. :(

the screen on my phone is being funky lately. the backlight will flicker from being on to being really really bright sometimes. I hope it doesn't die! I still have something like nine months before I can get a new phone with a discount. and I'm not even sure I want to renew my contract.
so i got the w385 in january. by february, the battery was not lasting long at all, anymore. so i took it in, and i was given a new battery. within another six weeks, that battery wasn't lasting long at all, too. so i took it in on monday and got a new phone replacement ordered.
it came yesterday, so i took it in today so they could activate it, transfer my things over, and give me a new battery.

I just won two Nokia E61s on eBay! I was bidding on a used one, won it for ~190 USD, and had also made a "best offer" on a brand new one for 200 USD. both are unlocked.
the new one is branded with the UK wireless provider "3". kind of an annoying name since it's difficult to find anything about them via a search engine.
I'm gonna check both of them out when they arrive and re-sell the one I don't want to keep. they're both on my credit card now so it's cool :).

quick cellphone question. would a unlocked cellphone on the Rogers network in cananda work on the verison network in the US?
Verizon is weird, so I'm gonna assume no. I'm not sure though. Verizon doesn't have SIM cards or anything. you might be able to talk to Verizon and have them set up the phone though. I'm honestly not sure, I just know Verizon is kind of a pain.

jesus, unlocking phones is hell. for some reason cell phone communities on the internet are incapable of communicating in decent english.
unlocking my E61 was actually surprisingly easy. I changed one thing with this weird hackish program, ran Nokia's software update program, and it was unlocked!
or maybe that was just unbranding it. I think unlocking is a little more intense.

Euro phones have some weird settings for MMS/WAP/etc so set aside some time for getting everything set up manually. (speaking from experience, I JUST got my Russian phone's MMS settings "correct", but I can't receive any MMS messages larger than 100k because Europe has a cap, IIRC)

the Motofone I am looking at is unlocked and unbranded, thankfully. there aren't very many settings on it to be messed up, so I would hope that SMS and stuff would work out of the box (with my SIM card of course).
SMS will, but MMS will (most likely) be an issue because it's from Europe. It won't be a big issue, though. Your provider will be able to walk you through (or have an automated page like T-Mobile) getting everything working properly.

installing the unofficial build of Android 1.5 right now. just got root access on the phone and and about to install the update.
nevermind I just reverted back, haha. the new build was kind of sketchy. one of them was somehow stuck in some non-Roman alphabet Asian language and the other one looped this weird music on boot after I installed the new "radio" update. that sketched me out so I am back to normal now. hopefully the real 1.5 will get released soon!

what's the deal with the android? i want a new phone and it's either an android (coming to canada june 2nd) or a blackberry (bold or gsm curve)
I dug Android a lot. just didn't dig paying a ton for a data plan that I didn't really need. I haven't used a Blackberry OS for a while, but in the past it has given me the impression that it is behind the curve and seriously ugly.
i'm locked into a data contract for about 2 years. i pay $30 a month for 6GB.
new blackberry os is really nice. more responsive than iphone os at least. consistent and pretty design too. with video/audio player functionality (3.5" stereo plug as well) and 1GB onboard + CF or whatever expansion.

how's the web browser, multitasking, and contact/calendar sync?
contact/calendar sync is good, at least with outlook/microsoft exchange. multitasking is supported. browser is mediocre, but the new 3rd party apps feature opera has released a bb version, mozilla is working on a firefox. app aesthetics are generally more spartan than iphone, but i don't mind.. it's way too slow for my taste.

yeah, I was curious how well it works with other contact/calendar setups. kinda stinks it doesn't have a really solid stock browser, but Opera works ok. the stock browser on Android was great when I used it. I guess it's similarly kind of locked in to a contact/calendar setup (Google, obviously). multitasking worked well but it was weird that you could never "close" or "exit" an app. and that reminds me, does Blackberry have anything comparable to Apple's app store or Android's market yet? meaning, does it not totally suck?

android is annoying because it's awesome if you buy into all of google's services (gmail and google calendar mostly), but kind of blows otherwise. the email app for non-gmail accounts is a piece of shit. there's a pretty good third-party one with imap idle support, but it feels like a compromise. the calendar app doesn't support caldav. there are apparently "sync adapters" in android for contact syncing with non-google sources, but the only one built in is facebook, and there is a serious lack of documentation for writing your own. 3g with t-mobile is nice, but honestly the browser kind of blows and just randomly doesn't load pages/gets stuck halfway.

I have an e71. imap support sucks though. it saves the phone is designed for people who have caps on their data plans or something, because it always asks if it can connect. imap idle is supported but the mailboxes will randomly lose their connection and stuff. not reliable at all. I've gone all day before without realizing it was disconnected, come home, and seen like six new emails my phone didn't get. I've read the calendar app does caldav, but I couldn't find it in the settings. contacts and calendar will sync to my macbook though which is good enough. no t-mobile 3g on any nokia phones except the n900 though, but honestly the browser works just as well as the android one. other than the aliased fonts.
I traded my old mytouch for a first gen iphone today. iphone os has good imap support from what I've read. no idle support though, so I'll just have to set it to check every five minutes or so. no 3g since I'm on t-mobile, but this wasn't a big deal on symbian since the browse didn't suck, so it probably won't be on here either. there is caldav support. ldap support too.
