i've decided i am done with the cartridge scam. i'm moving to double-edge razors this week. more anon.

oh shit. what's the scam? that they cost a million dollars?
go electric. it's the real deal.
yeah.
asemi > i was in the drug store staring at some hideously expensive pieces of crap when i decided, so yeah.
lr > bah i don't trust them.
hopefully my old timey experiment goes well and i don't cut my head off.
at least in canada the old cartridges i was using were $3.50 a pop. moving to double edge will cost about $0.45 a pop and will last longer.
these Murker brand razors seem nice, what kind of double edge would you get?

woops, "Merkur".
i'm ordering the HD tonight from
menessentials.com (they are in canada), probably just start with merkur brand blades
asemi > i was in the drug store staring at some hideously expensive pieces of crap when i decided, so yeah.
lr > bah i don't trust them.
i thought you were quoting me, and i'm thinking, "i didn't say that!" but then i realized you were using "lr >" as "@ lr"
and it sucks that you don't trust electric razors. they are so quick and easy, and they are better for one's complexion.
. . . they are better for one's complexion. -lr
how is it better?
it's not as close of a shave, which means that you'll get less ingrown hairs.
ordered!
Not that I have the money but safety razors look pretty sweet
that generally seems a matter of technique, I think it was talking about that in the article on the straight razor thread.
about it being quick and easy, I can see the appeal of the electric razors.
I'm tired of the mach 3 costing so much for new blades. These old fashioned style razors rock, the refills are so much cheaper! The mechanical durability and simplicity aspects of the old ones is just sweet.
Shaving is an event that could be a part of a relaxing modern day ritual.

my electric razor was jacked from my car a few years ago.
what ass steals an electric razor without a power cord? all my hair was in it :( YOU STOLE MY BODY WASTE
nestor: ordered!
did you get the kit or just the razor?
gj if razor only
not the kit. just the HD + 2 packs of the merkur blades
also some shave soap, toner, and cleanser
i am getting a badger brush tomorrow
this post has been archived.
here's a guy who likes shaving and puts out videos
this one is called
Introduction To Single Blade Shaving
yeah i watched those, pretty cool.
have you considered one of those assortment blade packs? you can get small ones for under $10 USD :)
yeah i would have liked one of those but the canadian site i am ordering with doesn't stock them. hopefully i am happy with the merkur blades.
shipped! hopefully i will get it tomorrow or wednesday.
first shave with the new stuff!
of note: i was a little surprised at how easy it was. no cuts. skin feels good. missed a few spots but i'll get better with practice!
update: got into the groove. daily shave, one pass is good enough for me. change blades once a week. i'm very happy with the switch!
nestor, I still haven't gone to double edge. I've been very much considering it because I've had it with these triple blades. How are you liking the Merkur?
I haven't really compared all the Parker models but this one seems cool:
Parker 22R Double Edge Butterfly Safety Razor
http://amzn.com/dp/B0017QSZY4/
Merkur Classic Safety Razor
http://amzn.com/dp/B0028FNNI6/
Anyone else have the double edge safety razor experience?
since my last post i went back to disposables for about a year. then switched back to double edge - still going strong with the HD.
you need a lubricant you're really happy with. right now i'm using baxter shave cream, doesn't clog the blade, doesn't numb your face, wipes clean quickly.
dp, not sure if you've made the leap yet, but i would recommend merkur over parker. i've never used one but i've heard that merkurs have substantially better build quality than some of the lower-end parkers.
i bought
this along with a few other products. i want to try it out as an alternative to the baxter shave cream.
i also won this
auction for 300 shark razor blades. i've only tried merkur and wilkinson DE blades and the sharks are very cheap and i read they are good blades.
ok, i'm going to grab a merkur. i'm
sick of my braun electric.
which is the best model?
38,
38b,
34c, or another?
thanks!
i have the 34c (heavy duty / HD).
before you buy you should watch a few videos. be mindful that it's not as easy as it looks! your experience will be dependent on your technique / lubricant / blades / etc.
SO funny, lately I've been thinking about making the switch to a safety razor.

I've considered using a straight razor to shave my legs, but the thought of navigating my knees with it is pretty terrifying
everyone take my disclaimer with a grain of salt... it really is the best method of shaving.
etrangere - look into double edges - they have all the cost advantages of a straight razor (e.g. they cost a fraction of that of multi-blade razors on a variable cost basis) and aren't as hard to use

These ones being linked clear out well/easily?

i got the hydroplane today - review to come tomorrow morning
you're a tease.
After 3 years I finally got a safety razor. A vintage gilette for $10 canadian... yes!
the hydroplane worked well. it gave me a closer shave than the baxter. i think it is a little harder to wash off the blade though.
i got my 34c yesterday. it didn't come with five free blades. it came with one merkur blade. regardless, this thing would make wrist slashing so easy

Was that revision supposed to be a joke?
...
i shaved off my beard this afternoon. i had to do three passes. i only got one cut--a pimple slashed open. not too bad!
two passes today. my soap kept drying out on my face. :[ not as close of as shave as i'd like. try again tomorrow.
technique is everything for a close shave.
i do one pass and i'm good to go, except in a few spots.
consider switching from soap to a non-drying lubricant.
i'll finish the soap and work on my technique. then if i'm still unhappy with the soap when i know what i'm doing, i'll switch
it's pretty fun, enjoyable, and satisfying, though.
i get the chilling thinking of the braun with the shitty
cutter block.
> These ones being linked clear out well/easily?
yes. when i was shaving my beard, i'd get a matted mess in the razor. so i just unscrewed the end of the handle, which loosened the blade. rinse it out, then screw it back on. if you aren't bearded, you shouldn't have to do that ever. the blade clears out very well without loosening for stubble.

i just realized that it's a seinfeld reference. i'm a clown
received 300 shark blades for $20! yet to try them, will report back
these are great blades. they are even better than my merkurs which cost something like $9 for a 10 pack.
awesome
what do you guys use for building your lather?
i have soap in a matching bowl.
on amazon, it seems that most of the mugs and bowls are meant to hold soap, not to be used for lather building.
shallow bowl would do the trick. i don't use lathering soap these days though.

I used a razor for the first time in years yesterday... disposable 2-blade and some cheap gel shaving cream. Wasn't bad, but everytime the razor touched my leg I'd have to wash it clean. Clogged with hair.
Good razors really make a difference, I've concluded.

I like how you dropped "leg" in there and then sauntered off to wait for questions :P
i think bluet and phi should have a thread titled "bodies" and we can all be spectators
i found the handle to my first mach 3, now i have two with spare blades. gonna see if anyone will buy it used.
i think i'll go for a merkur.

couple weeks ago the chrome plating started coming off of one side of the comb head of my merkur HD. i read about it and apparently others have had this issue. merkur claims it is due to water quality and doesn't replace or otherwise give any recommendations.
i'm looking for something more durable and i suspect i'll end up buying vintage on ebay if i do enough research. that said, i'd rather just buy a new razor that's more durable than the HD... any thoughts?
not too much research needed - i'm getting a vintage gilette adjustable slim (i have big hands so it will work better than the fatboy)
So I *finally* got myself a safety razor last week. I got a Merkur, I remembered it was recommended from this thread, but now I see nestor's experiences weren't all that good :-/
In any case, a week and three shavings later and it's already obvious this is a lot better than the `standard equipment'.
awesome!! it's not a bad choice at all. i got ~5 very good years of use out of mine.
i love the '64 adjustable slim i got because it will last forever, but for a lot of people buying a 'vintage' razor is challenging both in terms of picking one out that you'll like and getting your head around the vintage concept (ebay seller was very popular and sanitized them, i also boiled the shit out of it).
yeah, that's a pretty good lifespan. i'd also hope for lifetime use, but not bad.

thanks for topping this thread, carpetsmoker. I'm still using the mach 3 that gillette mailed me for my 18th birthday (how they knew my birthday, I'm unsure) and I think it's time for a change.
do it, asemi. once you learn DE shaving, it is easy and super cost-effective. the amount of money i've saved is quite big, something between $750 and $1000 by my estimate.
whoa.
asemisldkfj

yeah, jesus. I had no idea. I know what I'm shopping for after work today.
Your results would depend on how often you change your blades. I change my DE blades about once a week and paid $20 for 400.
Also, my numbers may be slightly higher than what you would realize due to cadusd and generally higher real prices in canada.

just ordered an edwin jagger de89l and a vulfix shaving brush. I am looking forward to this.
nice! i'd read a few articles / watch videos on technique before your first shave, but within 10 shaves you should be comfortable with it.
the key tricks:
- don't apply pressure against your skin
- use small strokes and clean the blade (remember to flip the razor)
- get a decent shaving soap, cream, etc.
^ What he said.
I cut myself the first time. Several times actually. Be prepared that your first shave will not be the best you've ever had, there is a (small) learning curve.

I've watched a youtube vid and read a couple of how-tos. do I really need to do three passes for ideal results?!
i do one pass but shave every day.
if i go for more than a few days, i do two passes. if it's the weekend - three, why not.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
that's good to hear. I typically shave every day and don't have very thick growth anywhere other than the shape of a goatee.

I am liking this quite a bit. I need to do some more shaving cream research because the shaving soap I bought feels dry as shit on my face. I've only managed to nick myself on the corner of my jaw once, thankfully.
dry when you are shaving or does it dry your skin out?
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
mostly dry when I am shaving.
i would probably keep at it for a bit. soaps are tricky. i moved to a cream pretty quickly but lots of people do very well with a soap / brush approach. it's all about the water mix.
