and so the season begins. one bank down, thirty+ to go.
i'm chewing my arm off in the library with these cover letters
bah!
two words: form letters
yeah, i have made my form, i just have to customize. and i'm not quite satisfied with it yet... still tuning it.
my perfectionism on these things surprises me
me too :P
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
mine doesn't surprise me :).
I kind of like perfecting them.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
oh, and my favorite part: exporting them as PDFs!
i used to like that until someone told me they wanted them in .doc format
curses.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I like when they don't specify so I can send both.
I really just like looking at the PDF myself; it looks so final and professional.

pdf is so much nicer..
i found out that cutepdf auto converts arial -> helvetica. beautiful!
(i don't have helvetica on my x60)
nice
14 applications out and about 10 more formal ones to go. if that doesn't work out i move onto the other 20+
and now i have the pleasure of attending information sessions. *recoil*
so there was some scottish associate director there named stuart
and i was like: "stuart, have you ever been to islay?"
and he was like: "i don't drink whisky"
and i was like: (internally) "fuck"
you had to be there.
yeah first round interview! and it was in the investment banking division, i was expecting sales & trading. more anon.
so i also got a sales and trading interview. i need to learn financial derivatives in two days.
fucking pre-interview dinner in 40 minutes!
stress! fuck!
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
man i want an interview were they take me out to dinner before hand
it was an awesome dinner, i really clicked with the people interviewing. one guy was a banker who used to work in sf in tech and was interested in programming and skiing. other dude was some worldly banker (went to school for engineering though).
plus food was good and free drinks is always a plus
interview is tomorrow morning... this could be it
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
well good luck man
ty!
are they based out of toronto? or where?
yeah, based in toronto.
i think i did well in both interviews! yay.
w/e still have like 3 more big banks to go.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
wtf @ pre-interview dinner
that sounds intense, or like it's for an intense job. I've never even heard of that. I've heard of phone interviews done before in-person interviews.
job is no doubt intense.
just wait until second rounds...
when micron comes to hire computer engineers and electrical engineers at my school, they take them out to dinner before the interviews at the nicest restaurant in town.

M̮͈̣̙̰̝̃̿̎̍ͬa͉̭̥͓ț̘ͯ̈́t̬̻͖̰̞͎ͤ̇ ̈̚J̹͎̿̾ȏ̞̫͈y̭̺ͭc̦̹̟̦̭̫͊̿ͩeͥ̌̾̓ͨ
really? when i go for interviews it usually involves a 4 our deathmatch with heads of departments.
haha :)

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
One of my friends is being courted by Microsoft, so they've been taking him out to dinner and "chatting" with him. Business is weird.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
just make sure he remembers that microsoft and him cannot hold hands untill the third date. if they hold hands sooner than that, your friend must call microsoft a slut and bid them a good day.
i agree.. business is fucked up
this is a short stint, no more than 10 years
i have interviews every day this week.
*explode*
so last night i had a dinner interview. somehow they decide who they like based on the dinner and then fly us to toronto.
we ended up just talking about food, wine, and whisky
it was glorious
i now know the meaning of stress
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
hahaha
how's the week so far?
well that dinner thing worked out great, i have second round interviews with that bank in toronto on saturday.
i'm a second year competing with all third years... it will be tough. but if i get an offer from this bank i am going to take it for sure.
second round interviews = six 30 minute interviews
should be a fun saturday at 8am.
think of me
i met the meanest woman alive this morning
damn american banks
hahahah awesome
i took the train to toronto today for a few interviews
they went really well.. i think i got 2nd rounds at this bank too
yay
turns out i didn't get a 2nd round with the bank
so i only have one shot at an offer this cycle. after that i start cold-calling and being sketchy.
i am looking forward to being able to see friends, read, do school work, talk/see my gf, etc.
fuck.
so no offer so far. it doesn't look good...
i don't want to cold call. bah
:/
yeah this associate i got to know pretty well called me and was like 'sorry, no offer. i fought hard for you'
i'm cool with that, i guess. cold call it is.
ça peut faut
now i start on off-campus recruiting. cold callin begins next week
here are some other options: an asset management position at a quant place in london, on, or working for a govt think tank in econ research. i've applied to both
i'm down with firms, colleges, and some government stuff (maybe)
but not highly political reasearch environments that sacrifice research methodology (e.g., think tanks)
okay, it isn't a think tank. it is funded by the government but is independent of it, pretty apolitical and critical of gov't policy.
still nothing. asset management job didn't transpire
some more options: equity research gig or some weird management consulting firm
it's not your specialty, but i vote for weirdo consulting firm
Key member of research team; responsible for researching, analyzing, writing and presenting assignments for one of three ongoing research streams.
Gather secondary data from various research sources to accomplish assignments; Develop meaningful research method tools (surveys, etc.); Develop hypotheses and test them based on the data gathered; Participate in the development of case material, based on primary research, as part of our Multi-client research programs; Participate in the development of intellectual frameworks for analysis of the subject matter relevant to the Multi-client research program, and its effect on business model innovation;
Participate in client engagement events; provide background preparation for senior team to consult with XXXX clients on strategy formulation.
whut
they do 'collaboration and innovation' frameworks... analysis of emerging technologies and demographic changes on business models.
i got some weird recruiting email from d.e. shaw. is this firm well-regarded?
uh... yes. it is very well regarded.
as to whether the position is good.. what division is it in?
no idea.
forward the e-mail if you want
kk
http://finance.google.ca/finance?q=TSE :BMO&source=finance
now i know why i didn't get that job :)
noooo broken
i found some really cool jobs on our career services portal... one in 'IT innovation consulting' and another at a financial consulting firm. i really want these!
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
.. How the fuck do you guys find these jobs?
got an e-mail today from the financial consulting firm.
they want me to answer three questions.
1. about aging canadians and its effect on banks, insurers, and investment firms
2. how long would it take for a starbucks franchise to fill up a hummer gas tank with coffee
3. what is the riskiest thing i've ever done.
have to e-mail it in next friday, if they like it interviews in mid-april. fun fun fun
haha nice
so the guy i'm liasing with is a wine nut
+1 b. adams
it takes 13h 38m
muah
applied to a private equity shop today *evil*
denied second round interview at the consulting shop
looks like my summer is going to be road maintenance again :S
shit, i haven't emailed d.e. shaw back yet, and she emailed me again
i better send her a resume for tomorrow
wow, that is a *very* good sign.
send one off!
just did. i feel like a shit for not sending a cover letter, but whatever.
i don't know what this really means. "no thanks?"
Thank you very much for applying. As expected, your background and accomplishments are impressive, and it is clear that you have much to offer. While we have not been able to identify an immediate opportunity that would be an ideal match for you, we will keep your resume in our files on the chance that a suitable position should become available at a later date. In the meantime, we wish you much success in all your endeavors.
yep.
applying to firms sucks.
yeah, i haven't found it rewarding yet either. next year.
well, i just got a random e-mail from lloyds tsb (british bank). they want to telephone interview me for a position in london, england. wack.
nice. good luck.
phone interview is tomorrow morning, 5:30am edt. ouch.
5:44 and they still haven't called. ruh roh.
honestly i just want to get it over with, i'm pretty happy with my current job, and i really didn't think turning down an interview was appropriate. besides, if i get this position, all the income i made would go to renting a flat and flights.
they didn't call. personal assistant probably didn't know the diff b/w GMT & EDT. frick
well, they apologized and rescheduled for tomorrow morning 1000 GMT/0600 EDT. woot
13 minutes
how did it go?
i'm waiting to hear back before i say anything :P
i'll hear either today/tomorrow or early next week
IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
oh.. and I did end up getting that job? ha
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Good job, nestor. ;)
one down :)
13 apps done? :(
Not going so well this year, I've already been dinged from a couple banks that I interviewed with LAST YEAR... oh well. This might push me into a career I'll actually enjoy.
fuck finance
if I don't get a job I'll probably just apply to a fin PhD program... :P

Dr. Nestor (Carbonell).
haha I fail to understand that reference :(
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Did you also fail to understand Google?
the fact that I only got 1 interview is offset by the fact that I got a big scholarship
wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
20 minutes from interview #1. then another tonight
sweet, just got another for tomorrow...
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Good job nestor!
got one second round. flossy dinner tomorrow night in toronto, then five interviews commencing at 8am saturday morning.
MUST BE CLUTCH
interviews commence c. 9 hours.
I hope this doesn't end up in 'what happened?'
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
You'll do fine. Nestor Carbonell never fails.
Mission accomplished, I got the job. One year after thread creation. ::::))))

Nestor,
Can you set up a bank account in canada for me?
that's what retail bankers do, I'm doing murders and executions
i mean mergers and acquisitions.
good deal, bpa.
:D
yeah, so open offer for any cool ttfers to sleep on my couch in TO this summer.
I'll be at the office so we probably will never see each other. ::::((((

the law is no protection
oh hell yes I will visit you in Toronto.
:D
start work on monday... found out i am in the mergers and acquisitions group :D
apparently the guys in m&a come in at 9:30am D:
that's bad?!
it's bad because they stay until 1am.
haha.. i was wondering because 9:30am seems really late for finance. bros should be at work by 7am EST.
well there are two kinds of finance jobs... those on market hours (e.g. sales and trading, mutual funds, hedge funds, etc.) and those that aren't (e.g. private equity, investment banking). the ones that are on market hours go 6/7 to 5pm and those that aren't tend to go 8/9 to some dark hour
haha awesome
i've always wanted to live on market hours, but that would mean waking up at 4am in montana. :/
eep
well, there are other markets than those in new york ;)
i'm not into commodities
(what else is there besides chicago that's worthwhile?)
asian markets, london.. :)
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Yeah, larz. Stay on London time!
updating my resume... i've been headhunted
nice
ugh, i'm getting really anxious about whether i'll get a full-time job offer. i find out this friday.
one of the guy who did my review told me confidentially that he thinks i'll get an offer no problem.
i'm not telling anyone (except ttf) that i heard this.. just in case i don't get it.

i got the offer

Good job, man!
:D
thanks dudes. still got one year of undergrad to go. i start full-time in july '10. glad they wanted me back in the mergers & acquisitions group though, i'd hate to be working on mining or utilities companies all the time.
hahah--yeah, that sounds like it would get old
the world bank has an internship in kenya from february to june. this would be perfect because i finish my master's program in december and (presumably) start my ph.d program in august.
i'm going to apply! :D

watch out for lions. they are no joke.
i submitted an app to the world bank today. i used this
cv. man i hope i get a winter internship there! :D
i just submitted an application for a specific consultancy appointment with the world bank (located in nairobi, it's a poverty assessment on sudan). i included a cover letter, my cv, a list of references, and two writing samples.
now i'll just hold my breath. :(
aw, I can't see your cv anymore.
it's versioned now. find the current link on

i'm going to apply for the energy analyst position. i'd rather kill myself than program SAS all day every day.
well that form was annoying. it required that i list five previous positions.
i did not get the world bank poverty assessment sudan/nairobi appointment. :[

I keep it down to two. Usually they need too much specific technical knowledge to get everything on one anyways.
my old cv was a cv-résumé hybrid. now
my cv is proper (it's over one page).
i'm going to keep retroactively adding my life to it.
