not the laptop variety.
i saw this

on lifehacker. looks neat but awfully proprietary.
of course you have moleskines, which are overpriced but pretty nice
i saw these
http://www.fieldnotesbrand.com/
on lifehacker a while ago. very simple but iirc pretty cheap.
i have no notebook right now, except google notebook.
hm, i just use a legal pad
i almost got a leather pad-case at this leather outlet end of the year megasale, but I didn't like the stitching, or the edge cuts of the leather on the ones that felt good :(
1. copy paper
i use this for note taking in class now. it is the preferred paper, as it allows anything. it also builds awareness and ability of organization. it has a nice weight, though not too heavy. it is three-hole-punched for archival in a binder. you can also use a binder clip as necessary.
2. quad legal pad
this used to be my preferred media for note taking in class. i bought ampad quad legal pads that have the three holes drilled.
3. miquelrius quad notebook
bends back, has a resilient cover, and has a nice weight for notebook paper. however, the binding is
less than satisfactory . but what else are you going to get when you're bending the spine constantly?
4. google notebook or an svn solution
extremely compact and can be stored easily in multiple locations for redundancy. revisions can also be tracked easily. unfortunately it is not a good field solution, as it requires a significant amount of technology.

sorry about the weird tone in my write-up. :/

I like the tone, lucas :).
I have a moleskine I use as a journal. no note-taking goes on in that, though.
this past semester I experimented with using a three-ring binder for notes and class handouts. it got really messy because I never took the time to three-hole-punch any of the handouts and actually secure them in the binder. plus the handouts were usually bigger than the lined paper I was using.
this semester I'm planning on going back to using a college-ruled, five-subject notebook. enough sections for all four courses, and I can just shove handouts into it, with or without folding them in half. at the end of the semester, if any of my notes are worth holding on to, I'll rip them out, label them, paperclip them, and put them in a two-pocket folder with other useful stuff I've archived.
yeah tone is cool. i've lost all my moleskines...
asemi i have the same problem. last semester i used individual subject notebooks but i never brought them to class or took terrible notes. so i tried using my laptop for a while but that didn't work. now i'm using a single binder and taking care to put headers on my notes... should work OK. when it comes to studying time i can just organize them separately.
not sure how i will deal with the holepunching thing though.. portable puncher?

I had a portable single-hole punch and I used it a total of maybe one time. otherwise I just stuffed papers in there and it was a total mess.
five-subject is where it's at. laptop is kind of overkill since barely anyone else uses one.
my program requires laptops. and i'd say 20-30% of the people in my electives use them in class.

hm, if that were the case I'd be more likely to bring my laptop to school. another factor is that the MacBook is pretty damn heavy and I don't know how I feel about transporting a thousand dollar laptop in a backpack on a bike every day (even in a sleevecase). I feel like it might shorten the life somehow or something. or just make it more likely that I'm going to break it.
true say about the bike trip.
i actually don't use it in class. i bring it with me and just pop it out for e-mail/library work etc.

yeah, if I have a paper to type or something and I want to do it at the school library I'll bring it. every day would suck though.
back in the summer of 2005, i'd commute to school via bike. and not my nice, new bike, of course, but my ghetto-modded single speed with only a front brake. and i'd have my laptop in its bag, and the strap over my shoulder. and not my new x60s, but my old dell inspiron 2650.
one time i was riding and the strap came undone somehow and the laptop bag fell on my rear tire and magically balanced there. all was well. :)
with my badass waterfield case and my hardcore x60s, of course i'd tear up some streets on my fixie! LETS RIDE THIS SHIT

hahaha. if my shit was lighter I'd consider it. ideally I'd like something like the Eee PC or another MobilePro as a truly mobile solution. laptop is just more a convenient-at-home thing.
I'm tellin ya, x60s. light, small, and great battery life.

too close to being a "real" laptop, like my MacBook. I'd want something cheap that I'd be able to kind of beat up (both the Eee PC and the MobilePro have all solid state memory.).

i found my moleskine! twas lost for many months.
nice! i'm not the biggest fan of moleskines. not to mention that it seems that every bozeman resident owns one. but they are pretty nice, all things considered.
overpriced for sure. but it is purchased and written in.
