so i'd like to build or purchase a 1-1.5 TB nas box in a somewhat small form factor (although i'm not locked into it being small). i'm just tired of having all my storage spread across 4 boxes when i do all my work on my laptop and have to turn on a specific machine if i want to access a file.
ideas or links?
ideally i'd build it myself.
i'm just looking right now to see what other people have done and maybe emulate that.
i haven't build/purchased one but i'm planning on doing it someday.

i can't find dp's post where he said that he almost bought his nas supplies and listed them. :(
ok, here's what i was thinking hardware wise:
http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=42 - just the chenbro case and riser card
http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=2#p1648 - VIA EPIA EK 10000G Dual LAN Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6816115030 - raid card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6820146545 - 1gb ram stick
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6822148288 - 500gb hddx4
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6822144173 - 40gb sys drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6827129013 - dvd burner
total bill: 1275 before shipping
for an extra 640 it could be 3 tb in raid 5!
as for software:
www.freenas.org - this is pretty slick and i've only read good things.
only issue with freenas is that i was hoping this box could also run as a torrent client/music server ala amarok with the web client controlling it and torrents through torrentflux. so a vanilla freebsd install would probably be the way to go.
for now it's too expensive but i can always dream i guess...
could the processor on that board even get close to utilizing the sata3/32mb cache hdds?
p.s. quit dreaming and get back to work!
