To facilitate the frequent travel of U.S. citizens living in border communities and to meet DHS’s operational needs at land borders, the passport card will contain a vicinity-read radio frequency identification (RFID) chip. This chip will link the card to a stored record in secure government databases. There will be no personal information written to the RFID chip itself.

i think i'll apply for the card tomorrow, no need to drop a full hundo for the ability to do something i can't afford (fly out of the country)

i would use it as my daily id, except that it doesn't seem to have any information on it except for a picture. sucks. :(

The deal with the RealID act is that it WON'T be in a govt. run database. Its held with a private company.

rfid isn't secure. . . someone walking by you can steal the info and steal your identity.

The RFID technology used in the passport card will enable the card to be read at a distance by an authorized CBP reader mounted alongside the traffic lane. The chip contains no biographic data as is the case with the e-passport. The chip will have a unique number linking the card to a secure database maintained by DHS and State. However, to address concerns that passport card bearers can be tracked by this technology, we are requiring that the vendor provide a sleeve that will prevent the card from being read while inside it.

italics mine. My passport is an e-passport. I'm not too worried about this, even if an identity thief did have my special number, they would have to check against that state database to get my info.

So lr, let us know if you get a sleeve too!

The sleeve on the full passport in built into the book but has already been shown to be ineffective if you are close enough.

<quote>
Data stored on the RFID chip:

* Digital photo
* Name
* Gender
* Nationality
* Date of birth
* Place of birth
* Passport number
* Issue date
* Expiration date
* Type of passport
* Digital signature that prevents stored data from being altered

Tracking Risk. Travelers using their passports as a form of day-to-day identification could expose the RFID chip in potentially insecure settings. Cryptographic protection prevents the data from being accessed by clandestine scanners, but RFID chips still emit a unique identification number (UID). Americans could conceivably be tracked through their UID, which would be exposed every time they opened their passports. The State Department says it's heading off that possibility by ensuring the chip emits random UIDs.</quote>

I'm saying someone can pick up your unique id. They then can essentially clone it and make another rfid chip that gives the same id number.

yeah good luck fraudsters, get ready to go to prison for a felony.

it's not worth not having a passport because you are so paranoid, I'd rather be running the globe than waiting for some douche bag with an rfid gun sneaking around who looks like him to steal an identity.

I'm more concerned about getting hit by a truck, or having a freak accident. That will fuck me so much more.

I'm thinking about getting one, along with an RFID reader, and trying to break the encryption. Would you guys be interested in that? I need to get my passport anyways. They aren't allowing anyone without a passport inside mexico. I NEED MY MEXICAN COKES DAMMIT! Asemi knows what's up.

I'm assuming the BAC session makes some type of encryption possible upon transmission of the data. I would be VERY interested in reverse engineering this.

cia isn't allowed to spy domestically
and i doubt nsa does too much
fbi probably does

and i think we have a reciprocity agreement with the u.k. where the cia spys on brits and the sis spys on americans and the respective agencies share intelligence
