people here are into math, right? I know lucas does economics and nestor does some finance stuff or something.

I haven't taken an actual math course since my last year of high school (four years ago), but I'm taking a calculus course right now and loving it.

math is a nice escape from the usual messy issues of education and race that I enjoy talking about in some of my other classes. math is just so cut and dry and it's really satisfying to understand it because I feel like you can have something of a complete understanding of part of it. social issues are more difficult to get a definite, static grasp on.

lr is way more mathy than me, the extent of my (higher level) math skills is like basic calculus and even less geometry (enough to understand option pricing and work with economic stuff).

math is nice though. however i think it gets less 'cut and dry' at higher levels.

yeah, as with any science, it isn't completely cut and dry. but you have to get way up into fairly current research.

but that is exactly why i loved (and love) it--it's the purest science, hands down.

got a 96 on my first calc exam. just got it back today. the only mistake I made was a stupid one. we were supposed to simplify some expression and I ended up with 3 multiplied by the natural logarithm of Euler's number on one side (ln e), which is equal to 1. so that side of the equation went 3(ln e) = 3(1), so it should have been equal to 3. I guess in a rush I wrote 1 on the next line instead of 3, so my final result for x was incorrect :(. I'll take a 96 though :).

we did a neat optimization problem in my class today. the goal was to figure out, given any volume (V), what the relationship between the height (h) and the radius of the base (R) of a cylinder should be to achieve the smallest possible surface area (A).

I was bored so I made a PDF explaining it.

yeah, I didn't notice that the equations looked like shit because Preview.app anti-aliased them. sorry!

I don't even know what that means, lucas. what do you mean?

you have to prove that you are at a local maximum and not a local minimum (or vice versa).

ok so I don't know most of this math terminology and shit, but I think I know what you mean kind of.

since I got R=(V/2pi)^(1/3), and plugging any plausible volume into that (i.e., any positive number) gives you a positive number.

after typing that I don't think I answered your question.

I used "h" instead of "delta x" just 'cause that's how I learned it, but here:

i was wondering about programming, is it bad form to use unicode characters in programming if the program reads them fine? like µ or θ or Θ or ω etc. i know a lot of people write mu or theta but it is convenient for me to just use my greek keyboard scripts.

darn, it looks like R can only understand β and µ. α and Θ are read as a and T.

does anybody remember what you call that mapping that convert a number from ordinal to a new base system dropping the cumulative digit? for example if Ψ maps into the 12 system then Ψ(13)=1, Ψ(1)=1, Ψ(23)=11, etc. if someone just remembered what it was called in programming that would be sufficient. thanks!

um, i am having difficulty finding functions that map to modular spaces. is there an alternative name that anybody might be aware of for programmers who want to distinguish modular math from "modular programming techniques"?
