only antivirus i've ever used is norton corporate. had a small memory footprint.

then i decided if i get a virus i deserve it. or something like that.

i was between avast and kasperski for a couple of years without any real hits in the system. decided to ditch it and just go with a better user/admin model and haven't had any trouble yet.

working fine for me so far, mostly some weird cookie exploits.

apparently the best is norton and mcafee antivirus, but both have insane overhead.

good free software includes avast and avg .

i'm thinking about never running antivirus software again, though.

my school provides me with a computer for my office, which came with mcafee virusscan 8.5.

my little desktop is a 1.8ghz p4 (willamette core) with 512mb ram. willamette is the shitty core that was the debut core for the pentium iv. because of design flaws, the willamette can be outperformed by pentium iii processors. (what a disgrace to the beautiful willamette valley!)

when mcafee decides to run the updater in the background while maintaining on-access scan, winamp cannot even play a fucking mp3 continuously. cpu use hits 100%. my computer is not good enough to run virusscan 8.5 and update it at the same time.

i have admin privs, but i couldn't figure out how to disable on-access scanning (it was greyed-out in the menu).

this helped:

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
We had McAfee on the computers at the school I worked out ... memory footprint was insane! In excess of 50MB if you weren't doing anything else.
