i got my econometrics exam back today. i didn't even look at my grade because i didn't want to vomit. i simply slid it into a manila envelope and won't look at it until the semester is over.
francis (one of the other graduate students) and i agreed to a new incentive structure today:
1. class attendance: if you miss class, you must pay the other person $50.
2. daily reading: you must do extra-curricular reading for one hour per day or pay $10.
3. final grades: you must pay $300 for each non-A final grade.
did you have an old incentive structure? it sounds motivating.
too bad about the econometrics (maybe).

my understanding of the european education system after high school is that there are polytechnical colleges, universities that concentrate on sciences, and universities that concentrate on humanities or letters.

schools im looking at right now:
University of Pittsburgh
Depaul University (was accepted here for their bachelors program)
Masters programs contemplating:
Information systems with specialization in Information Security
Health and Rehabilitation Science with concentration in Health Information Systems

So U of H fucked up my admissions form. But hey it's cool, I'm partly to blame. I have a lot of free time on my hands. However, I have been struggling what to pursue. I feel like I'm getting too old for college sometimes and feel like I will never reach a bachelors. This is not a problem of motivation, I have what it takes to get these. I just feel down sometimes.
Anyways, enough of that. I am a little unsure about my career at this point. I can either move up in IT or pursue something that I am very interested in(math and Political Science). I'm just trying to get some feedback from TTF about something personal, since I trust a lot of you guys. What would you do if you were faced with this problem? What subjects do you guys like? I'm pretty much open to anything. I don't really care about the money at this point since the recession seems to be getting WORSE.

i just finished two problem sets.
remaining are
two exams,
one problem set, and
one paper.
i'm picking up my pace to run
micro final at 9am!
it's on uncertainty and imperfect information (with comparative statics of equilibria tossed in for fun).
i'm studying in the bath, taking ambien, waking up early, studying more, then buss'ing it.
part of an email i just sent to a classmate:
there is a line that says this:
(dH/dp)(dp*/da) + (dH(p*)/da) == (dC/da) == 0
first, i have no idea where this really comes from, but this cannot be true!
proof:
(dH/dp)(dp*/da) + (dH(p*)/da) == 0
(dH(p*)/da) + (dH(p*)/da) == 0 (unchain)
1 + 1 == 0
It can be true if all the variables are zero.
yeah, i was just thinking that on the couch. but they can't be zero because of how he uses them.
anyway, the exam is over, and it was depressing. i might have done well, though.

I had that song dedicated to me in high school. He said it was for the "pretty pretty girl" line, not the "am I hard enough? am I rough enough?" lines, but it was still a little awkward to hear over the radio. :-\
i don't think the rolling stones coined it. although evidently dp didn't either, dp used it in a way in which it was previously unused. to be sure, it's not the case that i consider my econometrics paper to be an animal that carries loads for me. rather, it's a beast in terms of familiar nomenclature regarding the size of the thing, and the beast is certainly my burden. or, using the phrase in the traditional sense, for my econometrics paper, i am acting as its beast of burden.

I realized I only wanted to study computer science because I thought it would be easy for me. Physics, however, is fascinating. UiO also has some deal with CERN, and it'd be cool to work there some time. :)
that's good. cs is really useful in physics, anyway. i know a physicist who isn't good at cs, and it sets her back quite a bit. your cs skills will help you move ahead quickly. :)
One of the courses the first semester is actually "Programming for physicists" or something like that. Python is used throughout, I think. Yes, it's basic python with a focus on math and examples from the sciences. Looks like there's some Java too.

from talking with various professors in a number of disciplines, I have heard that programs that don't require a thesis are usually of a greatly inferior quality.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
that may be so for many degrees but from what I have seen for IT master's that I was interested in, the majority did not require you to do a thesis. it was an option and strongly suggested that you do that, but if for some reason you did not want to do the thesis then you were required to take like an extra 6 classes.
I mean, it's not like I'm going to MIT or anything, plus finding schools that actually offered what I wanted to do.
yeah, in academia it's probably true, but not so much with professional-type programs.

i don't quite have a list compiled yet. i'm primarily considering law school as an option (not to mention as a means swapping a career in academia for eternal damnation), but still plan on dropping some applications to ph.d. programs for good measure (in case this is just a "phase"). will keep you updated
law?
what about academic freedom? as a professor, you simply teach a couple classes then write on whatever you want.
lawyers have to take clients or have employers. (foghorn)

Not by much, IIRC. Isn't the Norwegian income tax rate something like 30%? Maybe more? Our income tax is about 25% ...
they have really high municipal taxes, too, though.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Very true.
I wouldn't know. My only income is a student loan from the government, so I don't pay any taxes. Well, except the 25 % VAT, I guess.
my tuition is really bad for canada. c$20,000 p.a. that's probably the highest undergraduate fee in the country.
I contacted the student loan organization, and now I only have to pay 60 % of the loan since I'm not living with my parents. If I don't pass the exams, though, I have to pay all of it. But no matter if I pass or not, there's no interest until I finish.

I had a freakin' KILLER Assembly test today. I think I may have actually survived it.
just registered for winter session.
2/3 of my way through first semester of econ PhD and I am not destroyed...yet.
in micro surprisingly i have learned little new stuff. 2 semesters of master's level micro at Montana State (6 credits) ~ 1 PhD semester Micro at Michigan State (5 credits). by this, I mean that micro PhD is easy after micro at the master's level at Montana State. this does not seem to be the case for Michigan State students who got their master's in Ag-Econ here. i would be interested in seeing how an "average" student at Montana State did here.
also I would be interested in seeing how relatively difficult Michigan State is to the top: Chicago, Berkley, Stanford, Harvard... also, there is a student here who did a master's a Cornell and was a top student there. top student but approximately the same confidence and understanding as me.
thesis: that a B.A. at a top school ~ M.A. at Montana State is unclear. perhaps for top students in B.A. who take master's and PhD level classes this is the case but in general i am unconvinced.
but it is hard to say how important the difficulty of a educational curriculum is to predicting the future success of students at a PhD level. if student native abilities is the only important factor in expected future success then difficult master's or B.A.s is only useful in potentially weeding out weak students.
i.e., signaling
btw, Wooldridge says he is teaching the econometrics class at MIT level or higher. I got an A on the first exam :)

metrics and macro finals yesterday. metrics seemed too easy. macro was a mess. i have decided that i am no longer a neo-con (if ever I was). I never imagined modern macro economic theory was a byproduct of such a convoluted box of hocus pocus.
the neo-classical growth model is a mess. basically the set up is fairly intuitive. however, the only way that it gives meaningful results is if you are extremely selective about the initial conditions. in particular, you have to be very cautious about how you select initial capital levels. if the initial levels are too high, after a few periods, the level of capital investment soars to 100%. if they are too low, the estimated level of capital investments drops to 0% or negative. so, to 'solve' the model you are finding the initial conditions that might lead to a reasonable estimate for growth. is this too strange for anybody else? i mean, at a minimum, a model should be able to handle a range of potential initial capital stock. it is not like china invests billions of dollars in direct foreign investment and everybody here freaks out because we suddenly believe that the economy is going to collapse because we are no longer at the optimal starting level.
...perhaps, i am missing something. i hope they don't give out grades less than B. that final was shitty.
weird. i don't know enough about macro to comment
3.0 macro :P
oh yeah, michigan st. u. doesn't do letter grades

I sucked this year.
GPA 2.5 but it's ok. First semester, full time work, fuck it. I'll do better next semester. I managed to get an A in Programming.
so here is the runings for Micro/Mathematical Methods (5 credits):
1st exam 120 points total
mean 111
upper extreme 4 or 5 people got 120
lower extreme < 50
me 105
2nd exam 120 points total
mean 102
upper extreme 4 or 5 people got 120
lower extreme < 50
me 97
going into the final there was a 5-10 point gap between me and the 3.7 tear.
final exam 160 points total
mean 117
upper extreme 4 people got 160
lower extreme, unknown
me 149
YES! now the only question is if my performance on the final is enough to elevate me above 3.7!
oh and 2.5 :( doesn't matter much first semester in but no point cutting off options if you don't need to. 2.5 doesn't get you into graduate school or give you a job.
3.7? i thought mich. st. did 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, ...
you might be right. i guess it would be a 3.5 or 4.0 then. i was mentally translating to letter grades when he was talking. i didn't realize that we didn't get letter grades until i saw the macro grade. that is kind of a pain in the ... i mean, there is only three options and basically 3.0 is a lower bound. so a 3.5 means you scored above average. stupid grading scale.
damnit! just give me my grade already!

1. i haven't received my grades yet: networking, professional ethics, philosophy of religion, writing for influence.
2. taking winter intersession quantitative business analysis
3. registered for spring: aesthetics, advanced networking, project management practicum, corporate finance, modern philosophers.
4. california school systems are severely screwy because of the financial situation.
are their toilets coin-op now?
the protesters are so stupid. do they think the school determines how much state funding it receives? the school obviously has to price tuition to cover the difference between funding and costs.
all i saw were campus protests. where there any at the state legislature buildings? isn't that where they should be?
"do they think the school determines how much state funding it receives?" - agreed. we have the same kind of stupid shit going on around here (mi). something like 20 different entire departments are being dissolved due to funding cuts and there are protesters in front of the administrative building howling because their tuition is going up. i hope these protesters also protested the 226 million dollar stadium renovation approved in June, 2007.
to be fair, the athletics department is probably run like a profit-maximizing firm. they (hopefully) determined that the stadium renovation would pay off in ticket sales and such.
:P yeah, if you look at the renovations it is mostly like 82 new 'luxury booths' and 3,200 'club seats'. i would guess these bring in some fat cash. especially since many games seem to bring a crowd of more than 100,000.
there were some protests, but it was probably because students wanted more seats for themselves as opposed to more seats for wealthy fans.
oh, i was looking at the wrong school. that was the UM numbers not MSU. MSU houses only 80k and only spent 64 million dollars on renovations.

So I guess since my grades are in, I'm officially done with my undergraduate degree. I graduate with honors. This is somewhat shitty because I would have had highest honors had my transfer gpa from MSU-Billings been accepted by MSU-Bozeman. :(
oh well, congrats! at least you're done :)
> This is somewhat shitty because I would have had highest honors had my transfer gpa from MSU-Billings been accepted by MSU-Bozeman.
highest honors at msu-b isn't the same as highest honors at msu.
highest honors at msu isn't the same as highest honors at mit.
gpas are not standardized, so allowing their transfer would make them meaningless. if it were possible to scale the gpa to each school's level of difficulty, then the scaled gpas could be meaningfully averaged.

i tried to get a B.S. in mathematics. it almost killed me. however, that's because one of my professors was teaching a junior-level real analysis class at graduate-level difficulty. i couldn't handle it any longer, especially while taking 26 credit-hours that semester.
calculus I to IV (differential, integral, multivariate, differential equations) and linear algebra are fine (and often fun). real analysis, complex analysis, applied mathematics, dynamical systems, and abstract algebra are a different story, however, depending on the rigor of the course. they require a thorough understanding of the concepts--to the point where you can creatively express yourself using high-level mathematics.

Can't register yet, but the course listing is open. Here's (hopefully) my schedule for next semester:
M/W/F
0900-1000 : COMM 2328 - Broadcast & Film Writing
1100-1200 : LATN 1302 - Elementary Latin II
T/Th
1000-1130 : COMM 2300 - Communication Research Methods
1130-0100 : COMM 2320 - Fundamentals of Media Production
0230-0400 : COMM 1301 - Media & Society
There, the only two freshmen-level courses I was missing will be out of the way. It's looking like I'll be getting out this semester with a 4.0, and if I can keep it up next semester I'm going to apply for the Honors College Creative Works Minor. Woo!

I'll be done with the silly freshmen courses for my major this semester!
And my fall semester ended up being a 3.0, not a 4.0. Turns out I got a C in my online comm class even though I missed the last test. I could retake it for a higher grade, but a C's all I need and I can live with it on my transcript.
Also, Latin is a M/W/F class from 12pm - 1pm, the rest are T/Th, first class at 1pm. I love waking up at 7-8am and being able to do NOTHING for 5 hours before class. :D
why would you wake up early just to do nothing?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I'm pretty much useless for a few hours after waking up, so I like having the time to wake up and relax before classes. I'm a pretty irritable person, so it's a necessity.
ah. maybe sit on the porch with a mug of coffee and a cigarette, enjoying the morning sunlight and the crisp winter air?
(r2: fuck.. upon investigation, houston is colder than i suspected. maybe revision comments are a very good idea.)
phi_

Yeah, it's 40F outside right now, and I hate it.
Oddly enough, I can't smoke a cigarette for a few hours after waking. Nor do I enjoy coffee. :(
no wonder you're irritable.
maybe you should speedball your morning with ritalin and whiskey
phi_

My best mornings usually involve an Odwalla Superfood bar. Have you had those? They're like magic. I can be lethargic and scatter-brained all day, but when I eat one of those I'm fine. Probably a mind-over-matter thing, but they're tasty and not terrible for you like most breakfast goods.

I may actually be doing the CCNA and CCDA at the end of this summer.
i think the ccda would be cool. then again, as you probably know, i have thought that since 2003.
it's too bad you didn't get the a+, net+ and sec+ before the end of the year (they now expire after three years). however, i doubt the continuing education requirements would be difficult for you (but they do take a bit of time and money).
chiken: cool, i'm setting out my timelines.
lr:
i don't really mind that i missed it.
did you get Net+ and Sec+ before the end of the year?
are you going to go for the ccda then also?
yeah, i got net+ and sec+ on dec 30 in idaho falls (treacherous driving).
i got a comptia membership, so if you want to be one of my "employees" to get the discount, let me know!
i don't have plans to get the ccda at this point.
any other cert plans?
nah. some other ones sound cool (ccna+sec, server+, linux+, ctt+), but i doubt i'll pursue them.

You know... I have 0 certs.
Not a one.
I've done a hell of a lot of training. Heck I've even been required to get certs. But when it comes down to it. I never have the time, and the bosses always excuse me from it. And it's never even come up in a job interview. So I wonder. Are certs even really worth a damn?
maybe they're not worth it for you. personally i don't see how you can depend on a boss excusing you from a requirement. it's fortunate that you were chosen at your interviews based on other things. as for myself i think i'll work on these as small achievements to sport like pins -- just to say i fuckin did it.
I'm with nny.
Hell, I never even went to college, I just did high school.
If my boss is a shortsighted guy who can't look past a piece of paper, then I'm not sure if I want to be working for that guy.

Okay, here is a word of advice.
It's 5:04 pm. You are jacket on, laptop packed, just about to fire up the ipod / cell phone mp3s and head out of the office... RING RING RING. You look at the phone. You don't know the name of the person. You have a choice... walk... or stay.
I choose to stay. I answer the phone. Some dude is on the other line. Sometimes it's an habitual procrastinator... sometimes it's just some guy in a bind hoping against all odds someone can help.
Choose to help. Calm them down, empathize with them, and do EVERYTHING possible to make sure they leave feeling good about what you did for them. Occasionally you'll end up a hero.
And that one guy/gal you ended up in a bad situation with, and stuck it out with. That guy/gal that ended up on a job site with you after your pre-sales team dropped you onto a hostile customer with no prep or support.... the stories are endless, and we all have them. Those are people whom become your friends for life. And any one of those people you work with, will be worth more to you than any certification or award you ever receive. They will back you in internal politics, find you new opportunities in organizations, or simply say "this guy was my hero" when asked. In IT / Ops, we don't have many good business relationships. We take the blame all the damned time, especially as outside contractors. People tend to even from the inside of an IT organization regard all IT people as a potential liability right off the bat. It's a hostile environment to be in.
I'd skip out on a cert any day of the week to help a person out on the job. That cert isn't going to say a god damned thing to anyone once it's filed away in some closet. And that's the most important lesson in business. It's all about people. Build bridges, keep them healthy with some semi regular checking in, and on that rare occasion you might end up needing them... they will be there. And in this fashion you'll also know who you can rely on to do your own job.
=D
ok.
so do you have some people for me to save or something?
otherwise, i'll just do another cert
what's so terrible about taking a test on a topic you study for? wait -- oh fuck, i could be helping the living shit out of someone right now!
i have a hard time understanding why you think that the cert is only the paper recognition from the achievement. so you're telling me that for anyone who takes a cert, follows the requirements, passes it, it does nothing for them that real work can't do?
look at the PMP, it requires three years in a PM role or five without a bachelors.
CBAP takes 7500 hours of work experience within ten years in a BA role.
how would this ever say nothing about you to your network, and nothing about your work experience, and nothing about your ability to satisfy requirements, and nothing about your ability to represent standards?
i agree that experience and network carries one's professional life, that doesn't mean certificate work doesn't contribute to your experience or your network, same with education.
i think your cert vs altruism opportunity cost is ridiculous. i do see your point about helping others and being proactive about your network, we all should do that. so, when is it ever the case that you consistently, over the course of your self-managed study time, have to make the decision to help someone or study? again i see your point but i disagree with your argument.
certs aren't golden keys to unlock the treasure on bowsers' ship to give to the princess. it's like: playing a bonus level where you are awarded wings in your que, or getting the mushroom at the end of the level, "i'mma use that shit later". it's not like: hey i'll play this level to dick around with yoshi so i can hopefully get to use him later, or hope for his future level karma returns. maybe getting yoshi isn't that bad, but i'd say he's better with wings :p have an apple yoshi. see i'm tending!
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
While certs aren't the most important thing, they certainly can't hurt you. If anything they only would strengthen the confidence the employer has that he is making the right choice in choosing you for the position, especially if you have already been recommended by someone in your network.
So if you have the work experience and technical skills, you probably don't need them. But someone like me, who's just entering the work force, certs can really do nothing but good things.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Ha! My dorm from last semester is still open, so they're moving me back into it. Moving Saturday! Classes begin Tuesday. Wish me luck.
not only are certs a signal to potential employers (e.g., i cared enough to study for, pay for, and pass this exam), but you also learn in the process!
i learned a decent amount in the process of studying for security+ (and even network+ to a small extent)!

The field of study was... hard to tell. In theory it's Artificial Intelligence but the two papers we wrote were published in a Physics magazine... We created a model for the neocortex based on random graphs, with a distributed algorithm running on top of it.

Yea I'm chugging along very very not well. They don't offer my CS classes every semester and I work a full time job at an investment bank. :(

DaGr8Gatzby that's very much why I don't ever complete my degree. How the hell one does work + school is beyond me.
in my experience, their success rate is very low. our undergrad econ program is very difficult, and it seems that most of the kids at risk of failing out have spend too much time working (not enough studying).
i seriously doubt i will make it back to grad school. pv of compensation foregone and the state of finance research really lessen the appeal for me.
the role i am in is far more academic than my previous role, and really as good as it gets in canada. investment management at a pension plan means very few sales-type interactions, decent comp with a DB plan, and a very reasonable work-life balance.

Nestor == fucking genius
yeah, sounds pretty damn awesome, nestor.
i'm kinda questioning this whole ph.d. thing, but i'm probably just frustrated.
I guess I get to join this conversation as well! I'm grinding through a BBA. I decided the best thing to do was to take all of my core business courses in one year, terrible idea. If I do get through it though, i'll have two years of super chill "fun" stuff. I am starting to wonder how useful this will be for me, but I want a piece of paper.
Good luck kids, exams are right around the corner! study hard, or for some of you, research hard (always?)?

Fuck Communication Law & Ethics. I hate it and I hate everyone who likes it.
good luck on the cfa exam, nestor. when are you taking it?
it was last saturday - done!

we're hiring... and we have awesome coffee.
nestor: how did it go?
bsdlite: at amazon? i'll keep at this ph.d unless i get kicked out between now and summer 2013.
it went fine. it is a tough exam. minimum passing score is not known, but is estimated widely to be in the 65-70% range. on the previous 6 mock exams before i wrote it, i was getting an 82.5% average with a standard deviation of 3.5% - the probability of failing is minimal. yet i still worry about it. in any case, results come out in late january.

economists and statisticians... they figure out their actual likelihood of failure. so sad. this is why our economy is hosed.
good thing i'm neither

do you have practical examples of when you used the annuity formula? :p
ha, ha.
i've only ever seen it used in defined asset life models (like a mine) when people are lazy. you model the first 20 years in detail then run off the last n years of cash flow using an annuity formula.
on the other hand, we use the perpetuity / perpetuity + growth formula all the time -- any discounted cash flow model with a "normal" business will use the formula.
teaching another guy's class for a couple weeks at 8 a.m. on wednesdays. today: basic stats. :[

I compared the
martyrdom of Perepetua and Felicitas to Hellraiser in class today. Then the teacher proposed a thought experiment where Clive Barker became a born-again Christian ... I countered with Hellrazer.
I really love this class, but the subject matter is abysmal.
i have qualifying exams in 2, 3, and 4 weeks, then i finally get a break. thank god.

Made it through the semester. Holy shit no idea how I did that. Summer courses now. 8 classes til I graduate. Fucking school.
wrote my micro exam today. it went well! two weeks left.
metrics exams tomorrow. only one week left!
at the margin, this exam decides if i have to study this summer or not.
i'll be quite surprised if i fail, however.
passed all of my exams. i get to stay in the program!
Yay!

the law is no protection
niiiiiiiiiice. fuck school.
just added my silly second master's degree to my
cv.
i decided on my ph.d. fields. i'm going to specialize in:
labor economics
behavioral and experimental economics
econometrics
i gave up on trying to be a macroeconomist. i just don't find it interesting enough. i hope to be a general microeconomist--a bit of theory, a bit of experimental, a bit of applied metrics, and maybe even some methodology! i'm happy about this.
i've also realized that i need to buckle down if i want to end up at a low-tier research university.
i'm pretty frustrated. i've been planning to apply for funding from my department to run an experiment this summer. i really want to do it this summer so i can get some decent research underway. i just got the call for proposals, and the proposal is due in four days! i anticipated the short notice, though, and have been meeting with professors. but then i read that i need to have my experiment approved by the university's office of research, human subjects committee before consideration for departmental funding. that's impossible to get done in four days (two of which are the weekend). i can't believe the professor didn't warn me of this requirement. :/
so it seems that if i want to run an experiment this summer, i'll be the one funding it. it'll probably cost about $2500. ugh
cash flowwwwwwwww
found out that human subjects committee approval is largely a formality.
got my proposal turned in by the deadline, and also got my faculty letter of support submitted!
nestor, do you have any research interests in finance/economics? we could co-author!
finance, yes, economics, no. and realistically my finance interests are closer to accounting than the bulk of what goes into finance research these days.
I want some human test subjects too!
to be clear: the experimental design must be approved by my university's human subjects committee before conducted, but not necessarily before my department considers my funding proposal. :)
Spoilsport
Maybe you can experiment if wearing a shirt from

yeah so i crushed CFA level 2 exam last june. final one (level 3) coming up in less than three weeks.
yea! slay 'em
this quarter is almost over. i only need to take two more classes to get a ph.d.! of course, i also have an entire dissertation to write...
