i will use this thread to chronicle my adoption of s3 for backing up my entire digital existence.
step one: install jre ->
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
step two: get jets3t ->
https://jets3t.dev.java.net/
i don't like the idea of someone else being responsible for my data.

Amazon certainly has to money to back up an SLA's they have with the customer.
bluet > google already owns most of us
i'm only getting ~100KB/sec upload to s3 on campus authenticated wifi. :(
i'm gonna try copper.
woo! getting 400KB/sec upload to s3 on campus copper. :D
gogogo
i wish this were faster. i want 2000KB/sec. that's what i get between MSU and Caltech-- :(

whoa, it was 400KB/sec because i was pulling from my external USB drive. if i copy the files to the local HDD first, i get 2MB/sec.

man ... I need a faster upstream speed. :(
2MB/s is filthy awesome
i bet i could pull 10MB/s if i had a faster computer
get this.. i'm using the internet access for residence halls on campus. it's copper (when i say this, i mean UTP).
i'm getting 2MB/sec upload and 30KB/sec download with s3. does that make sense?
routers must throttle download hard, that happened to me in res too.
back in my office on campus (using fully privileged university copper), i'm getting 8MB/sec download from s3. my cpu is maxed at 100%. i wonder how fast it could go if my computer were better...
:O

Why don't you buy computing time from Amazon? :)
i just got cable internet installed at home, which gets 40KB/s up, 500KB/s down.
my resnet connection gets 2MB/s up, 30KB/s down.
I NEED A GOOD DOWNSTREAM CONNECTION. this is terrible.

hrm.. the cable is bursting up to 1MB/s down.
is the s3 traffic encypted? could be throttled
i guess if i need to do any heavy lifting upstream, i'll just go to my office.
at home, download speed totally trumps upload speed.
i'm getting 1.5MB/s upload to s3 tonight in my office.
