The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was amazing.
Gone Baby Gone wasn't bad.
And I'm going to suggest these because I love them deeply:
D.E.B.S. and Stick It
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
The Brave Little Toaster
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
Fuck the brave little toaster ...
Man that vacuum guy scared the shit out of me.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
yeah dude, that guy was scary as shit
i'm resurrecting this thread because i have recently come into some great torrent trackers - cinema obscura, karagarga, and goem - and i want to get more into film. i know phi is a real cinemaphile but this is an open request.. any advice on old/new classics that are a must-watch for someone with a budding interest in the artform?
I watched "The day the earth stood still" some time ago ... I thought it was very good.

F for Fake
Sansho the Bailiff
The Red and the White
thanks phi, although i know you have more than 3 reccs... :)

Also, ignore the shitty cover. It's not a chick flick.

Didn't want to overwhelm. :)
I <3 Sansho
no please. i'm looking for the essentials of film. i have no problems with b&w/silent etc, but i would rather not have to commit > 3 1/2 hours to a single film.
phi_

> i would rather not have to commit > 3 1/2 hours to a single film.
Why the hate? :(
Well, here's a few more then:
Six-String Samurai (1998, dir. Lance Mungia) [Not essential, but very fun!]
The Scenic Route (1978, dir. Mark Rappaport)
Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom (1975, dir. Pier Pasolini)
Baraka (1992, dir. Ron Fricke)
The Wife (1995, dir. Tom Noonan)
Ariel (1988, dir. Aki Kaurismäki)
Sure Fire (1991, dir. Jon Jost)
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul / Angst essen Seele auf (1974, dir. R.W. Fassbinder)
August Underground's Mordum (2003, dir. Toe Tag Pictures) [Essential gore/horror]
Wanda (1971, dir. Barbara Loden)
Werckmeister Harmonies (2000, dir. Bela Tarr)
Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003, dir. Tsai Ming-Liang)
Reflections of Evil (2002, dir. Damon Packard) [American independent filmmaking at its extreme!]
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989, dir. Shinya Tsukamoto)
Shock Corridor (1963, dir. Samuel Fuller)
Outer Space (1999, dir. Peter Tscherkassky)
Ashes and Diamonds (1958, dir. Andrzej Wajda)
The Color of Pomegranates (1968, dir. Sergei Parajanov)
Dimensions of Dialogue (1982, dir. Jan Svankmajer)
Decasia: The States of Decay (2002, Bill Morrison)
A Woman under the Influence (1974, dir. John Cassavetes)
Spectres of the Spectrum (1999, dir. Craig Baldwin)
That's enough for now...
But, I must give caution about
Salo and
Mordum.
Both are extremely graphic movies ... the first about children and rape and abuse (just
look at the
cover art!)
... the second, just outright brutality and gore.
Seriously .
Saw and
Hostel look like fuckin'
Bambi next to this movie.
haha i just realized my post was a bit hostile... not intended, sorry
that looks like a great list, although the only ones i've heard of are baraka and salo (which i have seen.) oh, salo.
i think i'll supplement this with a list of 'hollywood classics'. imdb perhaps?

just saw avatar in 3d. looked really cool. didn't appreciate the political commentary aspect so much. it felt canned sometimes. it was a movie that was intended to be in the 'epic' style. aside from that it was like mashing fern gully with bush administration wartime. exploring the world with the main character was pretty awesome though.

The Town isn't too bad. I enjoyed it. Plus Jeremy Renner is awesome in everything.
I recently got
Robot Jox, a laughably bad movie I remember watching as a kid. It's even worse than I remember, and I love it. Stop-motion mech fighting at its best.
From Beyond ... man, this movie is absolutely insane. I got the director's cut, which only adds about a minute of footage they had to cut to obtain an R-rating, It's one of the few honestly Lovecraftian movies. It begins quite silly, with Jeffrey Combs as a scientist assisting his mentor with a "resonator" that's meant to stimulate the pineal gland. Well, he goes mad seeing these monsters that are always around us and his pineal gland grows and bursts from his forehead and becomes a new sensory organ and he starts eating human brains and eyes ... the whole thing ends in this bizarre sequence of S&M and mutilation.

So I watched Tree of Life last night. Though I liked it overall, it was extremely emotionally and philosophically heavy. I think it will take a lot of thought and subsequent viewings to get a better grasp of the director's meaning.
Pros: the acting was mindblowing (scenes with the family were incredible) and every single shot was like an equisite work of art. Gorgeous movie.
Cons: felt somewhat long, as reviewers have mentioned. Very hectic first half hour so it was a relief when the story line started to hold still.

Also the ending was a little too far out there for my tastes. And that says something considering some of the crazy beginning sequences which I had absolutely no problem with.
