How would you go about cost splitting and group possessions?

Situation: Furniture & large tv wanted by a majority of the roommates, I'm the only one not working. I could care less what quality tv or furniture we obtain. The possessions will become one person's inevitably.

What I'm doing: I reminded them that I don't work and that it would be difficult for me to do. I set a bit of a precedence with the house's router that I bought. Here's how I put it: I'll own the router in the end, you don't have to split the router now, but when someone leaves they pay their share for the router ($15). If I end up leaving earlier then you, you can buy it (including my share) and have ownership (so: $60/3=$20).

Ideal for the group: everyone pitches in so no one feels unevenly handed. I already feel unevenly handed because I know I won't own the sofa or the tv in the end. I also know that I won't utilize the sofa or the TV to the extent that they will.

Ideal for me: no more costs, while sustaining overall group stability. I'm ok with what furniture we have already, or I can buy my own little chair or something.

Any good ideas?

oops, typo in the title *possessions*.

we don't do any of that paying your share of stuff thing. we all just own whatever we bought or owned when we moved in, and we'll own the same stuff when we move out. I just think that the whole 'paying for use' thing is too complicated and none of us really care.

e.g., I own the router, couch, kitchen table/chairs, TV, xbox 360, dvd player, coffee maker, silverware, about half or less of plates and bowls, some glasses, and other cooking/baking stuff. I will take all of this with me (or throw it away) when we all move out.

in your case, with the nice couch and TV wanted by everyone, here the deal would just be, "if you want something nice like that, you buy it. if it's in our house, everyone gets to use it within reason (i.e., not breaking it or abusing it or using it when the owner of it wants to use it)."

Or sitting on said couch for six days straight, keeping the windows covered and lights off so you can play Super Paper Mario 22 hours a day, and then complaining when we ask you to move over so we can sit down.

...

Sorry, happens all the time at my apt.

4 people + 2 bedrooms = hellish. (But the rent is only $150/month!)

Super Paper Mario is great!

It's $150/person ... not sure if I made that clear. The apartment is just under $600/month. 2 bed - 2 bath, ~1000 sq ft.

Anyway, my (literal) roommate and I are the ones moving into a house next month, and since he owns most of the stuff in the apt already, it's coming with us. It's his, no question, but it's fair game as long as you respect it.
