i estimate that i have between 5,000 and 7,000 pages of documents. i want to reduce it to an SD card.
i'm thinking about this:

paper is not affected usually by solar flares, errant protons, and magnetic fields.
just thought i'd mention that...
you could always just go to an office with a sheetfed, then scan em all.
then buy a cheaper scanner. this one is nice though :)

this would scare me too much without an intense backup system.
what would asemi, sheet feeding to make a digi-backup without a backup system would scare you?
:\

having all of my documents on an SD card. it just seems so fragile! technology is scary. having hard copies of stuff comforts me.
oh, he's got s3 though too
wonder if he'll shred the paper? :o
yeah, i'll shred
i'll do sd, hdd, optical, and s3 backup mediums
are the documents typed? i'm assuming you want searchable pdfs
some (not most) are
i don't reference them much, but that would be nice

searchable would be so amazing. I've always wanted a find feature in books…

At least digital data *can* be backuped, this is seriously expensive and impractical with paper ...
sorry, we don't use bbcode

maybe the ideal situation is digital with a paper backup :).
that is so nice... imma go paperless when i get out of university

I need a shredder.
www.mturk.com is a viable transcription service. :)
i'm getting 300 words for $0.20. (maybe i could get it for less money.)
haha.. i just got 300 words for $0.02! yes! this is viable!
two drawbacks of the fujitsu s510:
-> it only supports pdf and jpg
-> it doesn't support twain or isis
as long as it produces high quality jpg files, i'm fine with that. i would like a tiff/png option, though.
the lack of support for twain is fine. the purpose of this scanner is to scan a lot of documents at once. you can't even scan photo prints with it. that's what flatbeds are for.
it's all scanned, thanks to dc (ozntz). now i have about 1gb of pdf files.
i'm going through them to organize them, bookmark them, and make sure everything scanned in fine.
then i'll shred all of this shit.
transcribed as well?
nah.
dc got me a fujitsu fi-4120c out of the crush pile of his it department. it scanned one page, then reported a jam.
i have tried taking it apart as much as possible and cleaning it all. i tried resetting the counters in the eeprom. i've tried power cycles, reboots, etc. it still reports a paper jam in the adf.
the funniest part is that when i turn it on, it successfully feed exactly one letter-size sheet through the scanner. every time.
i think i know why it's in the crush pile.

toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
sorry bro worth a shot
yeah, it's cool. thanks for the try.
i've scanned all of my classwork (~5,000 pages) into pdf. i also checked each page by hand to make sure that it scanned correctly. i only had to rescan about 30 pages. i was using a fujitsu scansnap, borrowed from ozntz.
i also scanned all of my files from my safe into pdf. they have also been verified and organized.
i've successfully minimized my hard copies!
now that i have the files, i have to figure out ways to securely and safely store the data.
i also need to decide if i will buy myself the fujitsu scansnap s510. if i want to get the $50 rebate, i have to buy it by monday.

I wonder what the legal weight of, say, a PDF copy of your W2 forms or something is.
i was wondering that at all. and i don't know. it's probably all the same.

hahaha. another thing would be bank statements. I have about a billion of these.
i like how the most superior pricing plan is called 'select'.
ohh yeah!

I switched my phone (T-Mobile) and bank (Schwab) and loan (Honda) to 100% paperless. It's made me a happier person. :)

yeah I did that with T-Mobile and my credit card recently. I should do it with my bank too.
i got a bank statement in the mail today :(

Yea all my statesments are paperless. I get an email stating they're ready. It still kinda pisses me off because I check my statements everyday.
