so im going back out traveling again to Nepal -> India -> and then back to SE Asia. this time im taking a computer since i will be staying longer and i want to beable to do some work to make a few grand here and there for plane tickets etc.
my question is should I get an X40/41 or an Asus EeePC?
Having difficulty finding a good X40 I want. Found a couple though. I'd go with the EeePC in a heartbeat if I could get some feed back on the keyboard. I know its fine for web and email but I will be doing some light development (python/django/php/sql/xhtml/css). I think it may just be too small (including the monitor) for real development.
The x40 is small too but perfect balance of size/wieght/fit in my backpack/
I've seen some x60s but 2 things make me not want to get them.
Cant run OpenBSD on the x60s (hibernate/suspend/etc/etc) and its more expensive. i'd rather get an x40 for a few hundred less and not feel as bad if i break it or get it stolen. (everything will be subversioned back to my server in the US and ill do encrypted hd).
anyway -- thoughts or recommendations or things for sale? :)

The monitor on the eeepc would kill me. I have heard some rumors about a sequel coming soon where the monitor fills the entire lid area and will run 1024x768. Anyone else have details on this? I can't seem to find where I read that…
I vote x40. I've always been a fan :D Especially if openbsd and subversion is involved.

the 9 inch eeepc is due out in a month or so.
and i must say... it is an elegant little machine... cheap as hell too. could buy 4-5 eeepcs for the cost of one x60...

nah i can get a nice used x60 for $750 (like 1100 brand new).
and x40 is around 500-600 -- althought used.
from what i saw, the x40 on ebay is like ~$200.

My roommate has an eeePC. The keyboard takes some (read: a lot) getting used to, but it's not TERRIBLE. But screen real estate is ridiculously limited, especially with the "user-friendly" GUI. I'd wait for the 9" and try it out before you buy it.

so i'd been watching craigslist and a guy fucked up today. I got an immaculate ThinkPad X41 Tablet with 1.5GB RAM, 40GB Drive, 8 Cell Battery -- for $350.
I called the guy that second and said I would meet him. and the entire time we were talking his phone was blowing up with calls of people wanting to buy it.
So i got it. Its seems quite a bit heavier than my x40 i had not too long ago.
If you know anyone with a nice x40, x41 or x60(s) thats looking for a tablet - send them my way for some sort of exchange.
Lucas -- where did you find an x40 on ebay for $200? Everyone i see is $450 - $700+ and look highly used.
any links?
thanks
sorry, i saw them for around $200 with about a day left. i haven't watched any end, so the price probably blows up before then.
congrats on the x41! sounds great!
hrm..
*how* nice is the x41?
i have an x60s:
-> core duo l2400
-> 2gb ram
-> 80gb 5400rpm hdd
-> scratches on the lcd from my F and J keys
-> some speck of something under my lcd plastic
-> 8 cell battery is at 34% of it's original charge capacity
-> otherwise perfect
i'm not sure if i want to get rid of it quite yet, but would you be interested in it?

@lucas -- man i really like the x60s, i've been drooling for one since i saw you and dp each get one awhile back and post those pics. the only thing is that i want to run OpenBSD on the machine (got a macbook pro for other crap) and i know the x60(s) cant to hibernation/suspend which is huge and also, the wireless isnt working properly and a few other things i believe. the x40/41 is one of the best supported units so i dont really want to switch unless its for a non tablet version of the same thing.
i actually really like this one i have but i would rather have the no tablet and less weight. but its not a huge deal. i can keep this if i cant find a good deal on a x40/41.
@arun -- nah not yet, i usually plan a day at a time. just get to nepal and have the first night stay planned, then go from there.
if i found an x40 for $200 i would buy it in a second
