... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Long story short, my bank account is no more. So I'm shopping around for one!
I was thinking Washington Mutual, any suggestions otherwise?
u.s. bank could be nice (free checks, really good savings and cd rates, one of the best federal student loan servicers)
and there are awesome online checking account deals these days
for example, charles schwab
http://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/banking_l … 2=checking
no minimum balance
get
good interest on your balance (currently 2.26% apy)
free checks
no-fee atm card (if the atm charges a fee, they pay it)
so i'd check out the online scene, as long as you use direct deposit for most things.
american banking is so hot
damn
online banks! shit son
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I don't do direct deposit, so visiting a branch is a must.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
that schwab one sounds like what i have at wells fargo except i dont get the no-fee atm card.
chiken: wells fargo gives you interest on your checking balance?! i don't get interest.
that schwab no-fee atm card is hot, though. if i use my wells fargo atm card at another bank's atm, the other bank charges me AND wells fargo charges me. but schwab pays for the other bank's fee. \o/
nestor> american banking is so hot
move out of socialism.
phi_> I don't do direct deposit, so visiting a branch is a must.
can you do direct deposit? you can also mail in deposits.
lr> move out of socialism
i'm going to. that is why i'm transferring. my current business school places about 3-4 people into ny each year, where i'm going about 10% of the class goes to the us (~30 people), split evenly between ny and la (in investment banking).

> can you do direct deposit? you can also mail in deposits.
I can, but I don't like to. I've had a lot of bad luck with direct deposits in the past (had it with my past 2 jobs), so I'd just rather visit a branch.
Plus I like forcing myself to interact with people on a regular basis. I'm too much of a hermit because of my job.
i thought you had a girlfriend
phi_

haha
I've been looking over the Schwab page. Seems like a good deal. Even with direct deposit.

If JPMC buys out something like wamu that's prolly the way to go.
phi_

Went with Schwab. Set up direct deposit with work. Just waiting on deposit slips/card/etc from the bank.
haha yes!

It's time for me to man up!
i have to open yet another bank account with my new employer.
damn, so long as i continue working in finance i'm gonna accrue a shitload of accounts.
speaking of, my old employer lloyds tsb was recently nationalized by the british government. i still have a couple hundred pounds in my account there too.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
That's insane, nestor.
ok, let's talk online banks again!
i just found this one:
ally. their website looks nice. plus they refund atm fees charged by other banks, which i love. think it's legit?
other suggestions? (francis, i don't want to use the first bank of arkansas. :p )
apparently you're lucky to get 1.00% apy on online checking accounts right now. back in 2008, it used to be 2.25% apy. :[
oh, gmac became ally. also, gmac/ally is majority-owned by the u.s. treasury. :) nothing quite like nationalized banks.
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
what about online savings? i'm still using my hsbc direct account that i opened in 2007, but their rate is shit town.
capital one bank is both enticing and creepy

I hope Wells Fargo is nice to me. It's big and fat compared to small, cute First Interstate Bank.
I still don't know what to think about my US Bank account. I forgot about it until recently.
I just closed out my Chase accounts.
To credit unions I go? Rates are shit today, investing is probably the way to go.

I've been pretty happy with wells fargo thus far but I'm not exactly asking a lot of them yet.
i'll look into it. i missed that wells fargo deal on the ipod touch for a new account and 5 transactions in a month or whatever. not that i want a touch but i could flip that.
damn, i wish i had known about that deal.
solid
u.s. bank sent a card to my residence that offered $150 if i open a personal checking account and set up direct deposit. i did that yesterday.
i like how banks are paying for customers
i'm rocking that offer
just got the $150 credit: "adjusted interest"

been pretty pleased with wells fargo so far. i feel like a battered husband escaping from the clutches of capital one. i don't think I will ever be able to explain what it was like having a call center employee break down in tears apologizing for being unable to assist me... but that actually happened at capital one... their capacity for generating policy blackholes was unrivaled.
sounds cool
p.s. i live in corporate america, and i <3 policies

I have lived in corp america.. now i live in us gov... and i am of the opinion that policies are generated by evil people hell bent on the destruction of all mankind.
definitely
i think they're more likely in larger organizations (whether private or public)
almost every bank is pushing fees on every account unless jump through hoops.
as a result, i think there are only two players--ing direct and ally.
ally
gives you a mastercard debit card
reimburses atm fees up to $6 per month
gives you free checks
will mail checks on your behalf
ing direct
gives you a mastercard debit card
no atm reimbursement, but has a good atm network (
allpoint)
no checks available
will mail checks on your behalf
i'm going with ally. it seems more flexible.
phi_

Haven't had a bank account since July ... *sigh*
rev: the Ally checking account looks nice, especially since most of my income from HostGator will just be sitting in a bank account.

Dude where do you keep your money? In your boots?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
What money! I haven't had a job in over a year.
nevermind, ally will reimburse seemingly unlimited atm fees, according to the agreement they mailed to me. the agreement also says that if the reimbursed atm fees totals $600 in a year, the amount will be reported on a misc-1099 form.
amazing.
consequently, ally meets or beats ing direct on all points (except for name brand). but ally is the successor to gmac, for what it's worth.

In my ideal world, I would pay for everything via barter/trade/exchange.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Same here, Etrangere. That's actually how I got all of my extras while unemployed, I would do favors/repairs/whatever for friends in exchange for some cash or cigarettes or food or whatever I wanted/needed. While it worked well for that, it proved to be impossible for sustained living ...
> In my ideal world, I would pay for everything via barter/trade/exchange.
i thought that the people in your ideal world use gold coins

The very notion of debt exceeding a pay check is absurd to me. It should NOT happen.
luckily economics is blind to debt
another way of putting it: you think that investing is absurd?

investing is gambling! we love gambling here in the USofA :D

True, because in Atlas Shrugged they only earned those gold coins by means of equal effort. \o/
> investing is gambling! we love gambling here in the USofA :D
define gambling. investing involves a few unknowns and a reasonable risk profile. traditional "gambling" involves no unknowns and a terrible risk profile.
> True, because in Atlas Shrugged they only earned those gold coins by means of equal effort. \o/
you mean equal valuation? that's different
economies would move so slowly if no one borrowed nor invested
i think such an idea is the antithesis of nestor's existence, and quite possibly mine as well

pretty much.

But is that a bad thing?

I suppose I mean both.
> i think such an idea is the antithesis of nestor's existence, and quite possibly mine as well
Yeah, seems that way, doesn't it?
investment of some sort is permanent - we are inclined as a species to develop new things / ideas through investing our time in risky ventures.
maybe i'm missing something here.
