about or approximate
why is that lame?

I suppose it also means home in one particular context.
I don't think I have considered it 'equivalent' or 'not'.

not - mathematical logic operator

it's lame because using it for about seems unelegant in consideration of its other meanings

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/~#Logic):
In written mathematical logic, it represents negation (e.g. "~p" equals "not p".) Modern use has been replacing the tilde with the exclamation mark (!) for this purpose, to avoid confusion with equivalence relations.

Oh, and tildes remind me of an operat~1 system which has problems unders~1 filena~1 with more than 8(.3) charac~1.
