I got nikon camera control pro 2 to do some time lapse. This afternoon I figured I would shoot my back yard just to test it out. I figured I'd have the following specifications just for calculating purposes to give me an idea how many shots I would need at what interval:

video output fps: 25
video output length: 20s
shots needed: 500 (fps*length)
capture duration: 1800s
shot interval: 3.6s (duration/shots)

I'm using mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ and more specifically mencoder to encode my video. This seems to generate a file without errors and it looks okay. The problem is that I can't get either of my video editors to open it. I have cyberlink powerdirector and microsoft movie maker.

I tried many different combinations of encoding and switches. Some are listed here, and I tried variations found elsewhere.

End product looks pretty good. It does what it's supposed to do. I can only view it in mplayer and vlc media player. I just want to be able to cut in some audio and some extra video, for future attempts. Here's the video if you want to see if maybe you can use an editor of your own. http://www.projectdp.com/timelapse.avi (5.37MB)

Notes for the future:
-don't use autofocus in a situation like this
-working on a unix box might be preferable
-ffmpeg doesn't seem like an adequate tool in this endeavor
-batch process exif data using jhead http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/
-use imagemagick convert to drop date/time info onto each photo http://mroach.com/office_cam.html
