i'm looking at finally making the switch from crt to lcd.
i have been running dual viewsonic ps790s @ 1600x1200 for five or six years now and my eyes want to bleed when i look at them. they are huge and ugly, yes, but i can't even take 75Hz flicker now.
i can't decide what setup i want on the new monitor(s). right now i'm thinking something along the lines of:
* 2 x 19"
* 1 x 22-24"
i'd like to have the most resolution that i can, so probably 1920x1200 if i go widescreen and 1600x1200 if 4:3. i'm not sure if i want to go widescreen yet. any comments or advice on buying?
bah, it looks like the 24" or 2 x 19" are probably out of my price range. i might have to go with one 22".
but the 22" only have 1680x1050! i refuse to downgrade pixels
that looks nice.. i really want a 24" with dvi and hdmi too. i need to consider non-samsung brands.
ach... i found a samsung 24" for c$370. in person. i am going to get it. will i regret it?
the 245bw, to be precise
the 245bw sounds like it has poor viewing angles, but i'm not sure who cares about this unless you are using it as a tv. for personal computer use this should be fine... right?
well, enough monologue, i'm going to check it out in person and act based on that.
check for bleeding.
> i'm not sure if i want to go widescreen yet. any comments or advice on buying?
I really like my widescreen + X60s. I really hate that my old version of netbsd XFree86 on my desktop sucks at widescreen resolutions (maybe it's just a personal problem?).
Anywho I don't have enough space for two 19" widescreens but I would if I could run it on my laptop (and if I had a job :D).
lr> will do. i'm less worried about bleeding and more worried about the size of the screen being so large that the horiz. viewing angles make the sides of the screen different colours from the middle :D
dp> i'm hoping that the 24" widescreen can somewhat compensate for dual monitors.

Stay away from TN monitors for 24 inches.
Also, Dual Syncmaster 245Ts would be ACE of spades.
why, viewing angles? i don't want to use it as a TV... methinks that is why all sorts of people complain. i'm going to check one out in person today though.
if the panel quality is really that bad i'll probably just go with a 22", and cry myself to sleep at night over lost pixels

Naw Man. You need 24". 1920x1200 is just rockin. I have a 226BW and now I'm gonna have to shell out more money for 2 24s. It's worth it :)
exactly! i don't want to seriously pixel-downgrade. right now i'm rocking 3.8m pixels, 24" @ 1920x1200 'upgrade' will be 2.3m. but i need to save my eyes.
what kind of monitor do you have now?
2 x viewsonic ps790
http://hardware.earthweb.com/peripherals/article.php/638181
i actually stole these from my parents house. but they looks like they were at least $500 each when we got them. hmm.
"they looks like"
god.
50 pounds each? :o
is the dell ultrasharp 2408wfp too expensive? it seems pretty great.

toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
i have the older dell 20 inch widescreen which i love however i think a 24 would be perfect. i used a 37 for a year which was just to big ;)
that dell 2408wfp is only $600 and it is 1080p with hdmi and va (not tn) technology.
get it, dc.
ugh, I have a 15"/60Hz CRT :/
60hz? gross. :(
your poor eyes!!
even 75hz has probably caused me to need glasses over the past 15 years or however long i've been a computer fiend
yep, the samsung 245bw had a terrible picture. saw a decent viewsonic: q241bw. gotta read up on it.
what about my recommendation? :o
i'm reading up on them, but there are SO MANY models it makes me want to explode
monitor shopping is freaking me out.
lenovo makes a 1920x1200 22" monitor, that is S-PVA. wack, i know, but might be in the cards!

love my 3007wfp from dell. 30 inches of awesome.
get a great one now, so you won't have to upgrade again so soon.
bluet> yeah that's what i'm planning on doing (and what I did last time... my current monitor is 9 years old I have determined). the dell 2408 looks like a good bet.
the lenovo l220x review from earlier:

nestor: what's the decision?
i need a monitor too, i want to build myself a desktop computer:
https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist … desktop+pc
i must have 24" at 1920x1200 with dvi-d. i would like hdmi and pva.

the
samsung 245t sounds great, but apparently it's really loud. i can't stand buzzing noises. the
dell 2408wfp also sounds great, except that many people are reporting a red tinge on black. the
nec lcd24wmcx hums and is a tn panel. the
lenovo l220x looks very nice but it's 22".
more later...
bill morrow's nonny!
well, i'm holding off right now. i'm happy with my crt and i'm not sure the monitors that would be better are at my price point yet.
dell is releasing a new revision (a01) of the 2408wfp on may 20th. i'll check the price and reviews at that time and consider buying it.

i'm thinking about this one:
DoubleSight DS-263N

toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
who makes doublesight monitors?
the same company that owns planar.
i'm thinking about getting my mom one of these:
http://www.directron.com/lcd2090uxibk.html
damnit,
amazon.com dropped the price on the doublesight to $719.99.
and amazon is
the place to buy electronics, as they allow refunds for any reason. (not to mention my amazon prime overnight shipping for $3.99!)
it looks like places will start stocking the doublesight again in early june.
nestor: what about getting two of those refurbished nec 20" lcds? they are ips--i guess they're great!
i think these two ips panels are the best deals at the moment.
i'm not buying monitors until september when i get back from england. until then.

Lucas .. didn't know it was yours ... :)
;p
Bought this monitor today:
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/nl/n … 20VW8FB-00
I really, really have to get used to having a 22" screen ... (I had a 15" for ages).
well, you're going to beat me to the punch then.
i'm getting the doublesight. apparently it has the same (or similar) panel to the nec 26" ips which the peeps over at anandtech love. sure, it's a no-name, but i don't care.
good choice. :D
let me know how it goes for you.
argh - i can't find anyone who will ship to canada, and who has it in stock. i might have to settle for a 24" *va.
want me to buy it and reship?
not sure yet. thing is i can probably get a 24" pva panel for about $200 less, which is tempting as the difference is only 1.5".
but it's va. :(
true, and i might get it yet. i just don't want to shoulder you with that kind of responsibility. i have some relatives in my close proximity yet south of the border that i will probably use.
http://www.prad.de/en/guide/screen4409.html is a good deal for me, can get it for $550.
ugly as sin though which is really too bad
damnit it is only ips in europe.. no wonder it is $550.
i reiterate that you should only buy a new monitor if you want to slowly go insane
you think you have the perfect one then BAM apparently the mfr does a panel lottery
or they don't sell in canada
fuck
fuck it, i'm getting a tn. if i don't like it i'll incinerate it in public
what?!

Naw man ...
Aren't you in finance? TN's suck at vertical displaying.
hahaha i got an lg w2600. the viewing angles are way better than any of the other tns and therefore i suspect it is a *va, as lg was playing a panel lottery with these.
i'll try it out, if the viewing angles bother me i'll take it back.
DaGr8Gatzby

Nestor: Samsung Syncmaster 245T
those have mixed reviews. they aren't bad for a VA, though.
DaGr8Gatzby

What do you mean by VA? Viewing Angles? The're Pva monitors. I REALLY want an S-IPS panel. It's the best all around panel you can buy. Mostly because I want a dedicated Vertical display for ebooks.
PVA is a type of VA.
i'm actually fine with the angles, but the colour calibration is extremely, extremely frustrating. it can strain my eyes in minutes if the brightness is turned all the way up.
i'm going to install mac os x and see how that calibration goes, i think it does a much better job at windows at implementing colour profiles
What do you guys think:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002R0JJYO/
(for my new machine)
Requirements:
IPS
90 degree pivot
viewsonic/nec/dell -- or a brand with a bezel that has nearly the same thickness all around, so it doesn't look lopsided as fuck when it's sideways.
<$300
Widescreen
been a while since i've been in the monitor market, but that looks like a STEAL - what's the catch?
I read from one user comment that it is somehow not true color 8 bits per channel, but 6 bits per channel? I don't know though. It seems like the one I'll buy :) see the
viewsonic page link
I just found
this list and it seems to be the best value for me. There are some decent Dells on that list though.
I've been doing my homework. I think this one is slightly better:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdet … u=320-9270
Dell U2311H
I'm craving some 2560x1600 goodness.

heh i love my 30 inch
That Dell has a good price!
yeah but i was just looking, the viewsonic is more highly reviewed on amazon... the quest continues.
so i was reading this tirade about how 1080p is 16:9 aspect ratio which is garbage apparently because it was a maneuver to save money while giving apparent value, while 16:10 aspect is the real deal.
update:
HD 1080 = 1920 x 1080 vs WUXGA = 1920 x 1200
i'm not too concerned, and I think I like the wider aspect ratio. or at least maybe it's not worth the giant price jump for me.
found another cheaper option, although not IPS, it's a faster monitor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6824002554
meh i'm tending to lean towards viewsonic again. i can't really justify a real-deal NEC IPS monitor.

I would just get an IPS. Most IPS panels are good to game. Do your eyes a favor player :)
I've seen IPS panels as cheap as €150 ... Don't know if they're any good though.

Most of those will probbaly be A- panels with some image retention. I have a crossover 27 inch monitor. Korean. If you only need DVI, get a Catleap or Crossover 27Q. ~400 bucks.
