isn't there a female stereotype about chocolate?
bluet's avatar
link
bluet
"It is widely believed that chocolate is a drug, but this is of course false. Chocolate is required for normal human function. Without chocolate, the entire female population would suffer from 24/7 PMS. This would result in the vast majority of the male population either being brutally murdered or committing suicide, to avoid being brutally murdered by hordes of semi-sane females in the hope that they may contain traces of chocolate. If the disappearance of chocolate occurs at the same time as a shortage of caffine, the world will definitely implode. "

I've never been so utterly confused in my life. The bacon and egg on a roll is like a hamburger it's been a dietary staple of the american eatery for probably a hundred years if not more. How does one screw that up?

got a really bad sweet tooth tonight and we don't have much in the house to satisfy it readily... so I decided to try and wing a delicious treat. turned out beautifully and tasted heavenly.

basically just peeled, cored, and chopped an apple (don't know what kind, not super tart, but delightfully so) into small chunks, in a small saucepan, cook em down with a few tablespoons of butter and added some cinnamon and cloves and a pinch of salt. added some orange juice later on after they started to get a little bit dry and mashed them into small chunks with a masher. added some honey and brown sugar and continued to cook on low until it became a chunky paste. added a small amount of heavy whipping cream at the end.

toasted up some toast, buttered, and spread.. so awesome! :D the apples are soft, but have a bit of a crunch left in the very center, the way that cooked apples do, like in tarts or pies.

now i want to cook a huge batch in the crock pot >:)

So for my (Norwegian) family's big Christmas meal this afternoon, we had some traditional foods. Unfortunately it wasn't for love of the food so much as likely the last Christmas either of my grandparents will live to see. :(

Anyway, we had lutefisk and lefsa. Lutefisk is basically fish jello that you slather butter on...I tried and could not bring myself to swallow any of it...and lefse is like a sweet tortilla made out of potatoes. Sounds weird, but is actually awesome with the right things inside (butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, etc.)

What did you guys eat for your dinners? Bluet...do you like lutefisk!?

these things are good! :]

99 ranch market: asian grocery chain, with a food bar apparently including dim sum dishes
dim sum: chinese style family meal with lots of dishes to choose from. usually starts with soup and tea, goes on for quite a while, lots of dishes come and go. then you get a steamed fish at the end.
cha siu bao: a steamed bun with pork and flavored sweet filling :T
siu mai: dumplings like potstickers but stuffed with different herbs and filling. the one i had was shrimp :I :X

the other stuff i had was some fried squid (calamari), pork, and a special unmentionable.

==

today i had steelhead plus an ale pairing. they skipped on the saffron rice and gave me regular, but stale. rice sucked, the rest was decent. the ale was a little overboard for the flavor and heftiness of the fish.

my diet is pretty simple. i don't know if i mentioned this. i wanted to lose the extra pounds i gained in 3rd year - maybe 15, 20 lbs (previously weighed 195 or so). basically my rules are:

eat breakfast - doesn't matter what (and i generally do cereal and skim yogurt on weekdays)
don't eat after 9pm
avoid processed food, fast food, junk food, etc. (easier to do than i thought, actually)
eat a couple items of fruit a day

a few weeks before that i stopped drinking coffee entirely. i feel pretty good, and i've started hearing things like 'you look like you've slimmed down'.

oh, and i'll be starting an exercise plan next week (for the first time in my life).

I actually got two. I bought the food bottle and the beverage bottle.

It has been a day and I refilled the beverage thermos three times throughout the day. I didn't bring the food one today because I was running late. It's working really well. I can resupply at my work break room(s) with coffee, or hot water for my thermoses.

I bought: several soups, chili, oatmeal, noodles, pasta, and burrito materials to use with the food bottle.
I plan on resupplying later with: groats, rice, lentils, and beans.

I will post about some of my thermos adventures.

I made some of the best bacon and eggs ever. Real scrambled eggs are kind of a slow process, and they were well worth it. Seasoned with sea salt and pepper.

Cooked the bacon in the oven with some brown sugar sprinkled on top. :D

I had a plethora of foods today at the international food bazaar on campus! They were:

China's table:
- spicy noodle stuff (overall favorite!)
- hand-made egg roll

Mexico's table:
- Jamaica tea (x2 cups)

Haiti's/Ethiopia's table:
- Vegetable maffe (peanut sauce) over rice

Kuwait's table:
- Arabic coffee
- Okra stew over rice (with chunks of lamb)

My favorite people were the ones at the Kuwait table. One man slipped a little line of expensive-looking (and smelling) perfume on my wrists and told me a little about their culture...they eat with their hands so they routinely apply the incensey perfume to avoid their hands smelling like their dinners. :D A friend from Iran told me these tiny, beautiful bottles of perfume can cost something like $100.

even if real pizza in nyc (or boston, or chicago) costs slightly more than domino's poor excuse for pizza, it is well worth it. and I'd bet you could find huge slices in nyc, boston, or chicago for cheaper than what you'd pay at domino's. chain pizza is invariably no better than edible.

Asemi is correct. You can find very good ny pizza for much less than dominoes. The same is true of subways incidentally, as well as mcdonalds. If you want a sub or a burger and fries... go to a deli and order it. It'll cost less... and be way better in almost if not every respect. Hell I've walked into pubs and ordered a pint and a burger / fries for less than the cost of a subways sandwich.

It's been my experience that fast food joints are hella over priced and generally crap.

This morning:
Baked a loaf of whole wheat bread.
Made a "smoothie" out of: orange, banana, blueberries, carrot, & grapes. (Used a juice "extractor" that pretty much pulverizes whatever you put into it ... but I like pulp so it works well for me.)

This afternoon:
Finding all the vegetables we have and gonna do something amazing!

Update:

Amazing is pushing it, but I made a satisfying lunch. Made some basil-pecan pesto sauce ... turned out okay, but I probably should have soaked the pecans before using them. Live and learn, I suppose.

So my roomate several years ago had this incredibly nice awesome and severely stupid boxer for a dog. Anyways because my roomate used to toss him scraps the dog was an abject beggar when it came to food.

Anyways, one day he was being a real pain... like whimpering because I wouldn't give him food. So I grabbed some hot sauce squirted it on some food and tossed it to him.

What happened next was both sad, hilarious, and awesome. He caught the food. Dropped it on the floor. Barked at it. Circled it a few times... then repeated the whole thing all over again.

He did this for probably 20 minutes before finally eating the damn thing.

Kinda reminded me of your jalapeno problem.

Nah he was fine. He ate a pack of batteries once... we only found out when the batteries started showing up in his poop.

Actually the only time he had stomach problems was when we gave him the wrong type of bones. We thought they were fine, but it turned out they weren't for a dog his size... he was able to snap them and consume them when they were sharp. We felt horrible about that. He was miserable for like 2 weeks.

I went to a sweet little french cafe in my neighborhood this evening, La Presse. There, I had two glasses of pinot noir and two rounds of amazing bread & butter for $8.50.

They have yet to charge me for the bread & butter...I've been there 4 times now! The bread is listed on their menu for $2.50 however I think they must have a policy where, if you order anything else, it's on the house.

Great for me, because the bread is why I go there!

We use American Wagyu beef, which is the closest thing to real Kobe beef that you can get in the states I believe. I think it's illegal to export 100% real kobe beef from Japan. The American Wagyu cattle is a combination of black angus and Wagyu, which originally come from Kobe, Japan.

My buddy on campus, Zach, and I made this amazing duck dish this afternoon. We seared the duck breasts (freshly killed ducks, of course) in a little bit of oil, and made a pan sauce with some of the duck blood, wine, cayenne pepper, and rasberries. Wrapped up the duck in foil, poured some sauce in the pouch, crimped, and braised on the grill for half an hour or so. Lip-smackingly good.

And I marinated some bratwursts in beer and butter and grilled those up. Zach made some decent burgers.

We fed 9 people. :D

relevant question: when you're cutting/eating meat, which hands do you use? I keep the fork in my left hand for cutting and eating. I remember hearing something when I was a kid about it being proper manners to cut like that, then put down your utensils and pick up your fork with your right hand to eat the piece you just cut.

I used to hate cilantro. 3 or 4 years ago I put it on a noodle dish not really knowing what it tasted like...I thought it was just another generic-ish green herb, and I couldn't finish the plate; it ruined it for me.

But I think the breakthrough came when I met larz and he kept making this really intense, chunky guacamole with fresh cilantro. I guess it was too good to stay hateful of or something.

clearly this thread is not a great sample of my diet. however, you've picked up on something i haven't posted here.

my ex-girlfriend* and i tried to cut down on meat. we thought most meat was unhealthy (due to processing, use of antibiotics, etc.), uneconomical (from a macro perspective), and very detrimental to the environment relative to most plant-based food. it had nothing to do with animal rights. when we dined out or put extra effort into meals at home, we always ate meat. this was conditional on having some understanding of the source of the meat. with the lack of a reliable dinner partner, i haven't been eating a lot of meat lately.

*started dating in february 2010, broke up in february 2011

I catered a dinner party for some people the other night.. here's my menu! Was supposed to be japanese influenced. The sushi, yuzu fruit, Nigori sake sauce, and shu puffs hopefully worked for a japanese theme.

Sushi:
Sushi rolls (spicy tuna, avocado, mango) (hamachi, cucumber, avocado topped with cilantro)
Salmon, Hamachi, and Tuna nigiri

Salad:
Sauteed shiitake salad with yuzu-ginger dressing

Main Course:
Pan seared scallops in Nigori sake cream sauce with roasted truffle potatoes and steamed lemon broccolini

Dessert:
Shu puffs (pate a choux) with strawberry sauce

Also had a selection of sakes:
Momokawa pearl organic nigori
Murai Genshu nigori
Tentaka Kuni "Hawk in the Heavens"
Konteki Tears of Dawn Daiginjo
