i got a summer job with a british bank in london, england.

i'm quite happy about it.

this is crazy. have fun!
how are you going to find a place to live or will they help you out with that?
congrats! what will you be working on?
place to live might be tough. i might know a few people through connections so i'll probably try that first.
i will be working in the corporate markets division in the financial institutions group. so probably structured finance in general but practically research for clients (other banks, insurers, asset managers, etc.)
hope that made sense

None of that made any sense to me. I mean, each word made sense, but throw it together and it's like "colorless green ideas sleep furiously." Then again, all corporate-speak is like that with me.
haha, understandable.
in other news, this was the craziest weekend of my life.
* found out about london, england
* hooked up with 'an old flame', as some might say (well, have come close many times over the past 5 years or so but never actually got there until now)
* almost got in a serious long distance relationship with said flame (no!)
* grandmother is in the hospital, seems to be a bit batty
i'll be working at lloyds tsb headquarters at 25 gresham street. there is so much stuff to see in london... i might need a camera
i really need a camera.
anyway, i think i know where i'm living, roughly:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en& … ;q=Clapham ,+Greater+London,+UK&ie=UTF8&ll=51.45882,-0.156126&spn=0.025135,0.053902&t=h&z=15
that link got owned

pre tag it!
so this is the first time i've ever gone anywhere that i know absolutely no one. when i went to university a bunch of my close friends also went to the same university (we didn't plan it that way).
i know there will be a few other interns from my university but i don't know them personally. of course we'll hang out together at the beginning, but i'd like to meet people outside of work (i don't think bankers will be all that interesting). any ideas on how to effectively meet people in a huge town like london? i checked out
meetup.com and a bunch of the meetups look promising. has anyone else been in a situation like this?
oh yeah, and it is business formal EVERY DAY
uk finance = hardcore

find a hip local music/art/whatever message board.
I could ask around and see if anyone I know knows of one.
Hey nestor, yeah I'm kinda like that in San Jose. I used meetup and joined a handful of groups! I don't know very many people. Also my school has groups but they seemed difficult to join in the Spring :\ Retrying in Fall.
groups:
The San Jose Hiking Meetup Group
South Bay Food Adventurer Club
South Bay Singles and Friends
Photography Career Mentoring - for aspiring pros
The SiliconValley NewTech Meetup Group
Santa Clara Valley Singles
The Bay Area Photography & Exploration Meetup Group
Silicon Valley Cloud Computing Group
The Bay Area Glamour/Artistic Photography Meetup Group
Bay Area Foodies
The South Bay Photography Meetup Group
I'm also in the Sierra club, but I really need to get on the hike times and get out there.
GET THAT MONEY'S WORTH

Culture shock?
a bit, yeah. it's very similar to canada but of course different in small ways... just general day-to-day type stuff: currency, vocabulary, transit, etc.

that's a really cool picture. what are the cranes for? (Olympics 2012 construction?)
not sure. i don't see that end of town, it's way far in the east end. there are basically two financial districts, one in the historical centre of london and the other way out in the docklands. i work in the former and the image is of the latter.
oh and PLANE TO TORONTO TMRW!!
asemisldkfj

hm maybe it is the Olympics construction then; I think that's happening in East London.
it sure is, tons of stuff happening over there
i really like east london, when i move back here i'll probably live out east, slightly west, very west, or slightly south (of the City)
also, I'm going to be in transit for the next ~20 hours, not dead. Think of me in the jet plane

Eek.
well made it home safely, ended up staying awake for about ~44 hours straight with about 30min sleep total
i made the mistake of making plans with people for last night, and by the end i was a) moderately intoxicated b) hallucinating c) periodically drifting off and then talking nonsense
which was amusing for a while but got frustrating, especially the hallucinations. so i went to bed.
it felt really, really good.
anyway back home now in the smaller london... this epic is complete.
hallucinations ... :-/
> c) periodically drifting off and then talking nonsense
Haha, and this is different from your normal behaviour, how? ;-)
hahaha, i like it when people do a b and c.
it was pretty fucked up & hilarious for those around me
