Looking back on the regional terms thread, and the food thread ... this just kinda seemed natural.

I dunno... what are your favorite foods from the region you live in? AND, how do you cook it?

I'm going with fried okra. Stuff is mighty good!

Easy way:
1) Buy bag of frozen fried okra.
2) Fry.
3) Eat.

Good way:
1) Chop a pound of okra into ~ 1/4" segments.
2) Put in collander, rinse and briefly drain.
3) Put about a half-cup of cornmeal into a baggie (Ziploc preferred), add okra, shake!
4) Cover the bottom of a cast-iron skillet with vegetable oil and heat to about 350-375F.
5) Cook okra in oil until one side is golden brown, flip, cook until other side is done. Repeat until all sides are cooked through.
6) Use a slotted spoon to take okra from oil to a cooling rack and salt them. (Put newspaper, paper towels, whatever, underneath to catch the oil)
7) Cool for a few minutes. Serve!

around here we've got svartpølse which is a sausage made with horse meat. you slice it thinly and put it on sliced bread

I like that all the Montanans are refraining from commenting. It's probably because we're all realizing the only thing that might be noteworthy about our regional cuisine are rocky mountain oysters. And unlike phi's delicious okra recipes, there is no good way to make them...because they are inherently not good.

Ok that's too harsh; some people love shoveling cow balls down their throats. I guess I'm just thrown off by the fact that they're usually harvested personally...

i hate that you can't get it with sausages in sweden. you know, hot dog with lefse (actually lompe, which is circular) instead of bread

I just went back and looked at poutine ... wow. That is bizarre.

Of course, I put cornbread in milk and eat it with a spoon.

Went to my favorite taco stand that's beneath an overpass.

Chorizo con huevos! I don't know if we can take credit for that as a regional dish, but it's damn tasty.

I'm on a Mexican food spree and looking out for some good barbacoa and menudo. Gatz? Help?

I have Chorizo con huevos enough that my roommates recognize who is cooking before emerging from their rooms.
