this is a good resource, and i think he lives in montana.
i thought about that but they don't survive winters well.
i'll still try
i want a plant
that guy (the bonsai hunk .us guy) recommended
http://www.bonsainw.com/ to me.
i see one needs $ to fund a bonsai habit
i just bought the cheaper golden gate ficus on amazon.com.

plants are nice. in my room I have a basil plant, some generic fern that my roommate gave me, a spider plant, and a jasmine plant.
i am plantless
lr has a dangerous bonsai habit
haha.. it's not a habit yet.
did you buy the shears?
"the" shears? no, i haven't bought any (yet).
haha
i ordered the bonsai with free two-day amazon prime shipping, which usually means two-day ups.
the bonsai shipped today via fedex two-day.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
how are you liking your tree lr?
this looks really fun :)
it's nice, although it's not quite the roommate i wanted.

Maybe you should mod out Roomba with a face.
^ highly recommended

I endorse Roomba-face.
my trees are not flourishing because of my lack of direct sunlight. i'm looking into sodium lamps.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000STCQSC/
coming soon: lr's grow op
lowe's has a 150 watt high-pressure sodium floodlight for about $60. i might go buy it and make my trees love it.
one of my trees is on the verge of dying. i'm going with fluorescent for now.
i can't figure out where to put the trees and the light in my apartment. :(
they've gotten 20 hours of 5000K light at 5000 lumens so far, and they're already doing a lot better!
i have the light on a timer to turn on at 6am and off at 10pm.
:D
is this from the lowe's light?
ba> is this from the lowe's light?
lr> i'm going with fluorescent for now.
i bought a $10 fluorescent fixture and a timer from walmart, and i bought two 32 watt 5000 K fluorescent tubes from the home depot.
so it's a $20 setup.
i like it!
bonsai wall is complete! pictures soon..
came through in rss this morning! looks great

Interesting spot for them...they look happier already

The big tree is higher up than the light...?
yeah, it's okay for now. i haven't decided if i'll clip down the tree or raise the light.
down with the tree! you need so show them who's boss
i'm so glad you got them... are you happy with them?
yeah! they are pretty nice to have in my room. every time i come home, i notice how much my apartment smells like a greenhouse.
the smaller ficus is having issues. i think i may be burning it with too much light.

this guy is on death's doorstep.
ficus microcarpa. rest in peace?
maybe you should give 'im some morphine
or a big shot of fertilizer
i think i'll do that (the latter suggestion).
i got some 8-7-6 fertilizer. i hope the tree will be lovin' it.
oh NO! save that guy!
i finally found a round humidity tray, but shipping costs $9. :(

can't you just use a dining plate?
i did for a while, but it got kinda nasty.
soap
how is it going?
trashed.
aw :(
apparently here's what i should have done with the dying bonsai:
- used no fertilizer
- watered it well
- enclosed it (and the pot) in a large, clear plastic bag
- kept it under my fluorescent light for a couple weeks
this one has a serious aphid infestation:
http://www.wingedleopard.net/lucas/photos/image/39/
it got doused with insecticide this evening.
oh no! get those aphids
can't you get a bucket of ladybugs for aphids? :)
yeah, i can, but i don't think there are enough aphids to support a large population of ladybugs.
and i don't want to be pooped on by ladybugs while i sleep.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MR6WRG/
not to mention the ladybug larvae are kinda scary :o
want
i'm thinking about setting up an automated drip-watering system.

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Why not set up some hydroponics? (not a pot joke, but a serious question -- though I'm not sure how bonsai will work without soil and pots and so on...)
i've thought about it. i think it's too much for me to learn right now with my other commitments.

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Fair enough.
i'm thinking of trying a brussel's bonsai tree again from amazon:
gardenia
fukien tea
jabotacaba
but i might try to make a trip to seattle instead and buy a couple from a bonsai nursery there.

The gardenia is lovely, and I think you'd appreciate the blooms :)
The baby tea is also nice, I like its shape
i got three new trees last weekend--another gardenia and two different species of cotoneaster.
one of the cotoneaster trees has amazing flora at the base of the trunk:

that looks so awesome.
for future reference, i have this lighting:

cri , 5000 K
cct
(2) 2800 lm, 20000 h, 78
cri , 3000 K
cct
totals:
5700 lm @ ( 5000 K
cct ~ 85
cri )
5600 lm @ ( 3000 K
cct ~ 78
cri )
more flowers!

:) Yeah I like a little more brightness in the petals
me too. but i also like turning up the blacks to drop out a lot of the background.

I do that too...all the time! I like that now the yellow on the edges pops. I didn't notice it before!
Access denied?
i already removed it. :o
i think my cotoneaster and gardenia trees have some kind of bug. i quarantined them from my ficus and doused them in a pesticide.

:-\
my fluorescent lights wnet out (ballasts and all). they sucked anyway.
my trees are starving for light, so i just bought a
glowpanel.
