cool. does it have any meaning to you or do you just think it's cool? not to say either one of those should disqualify it as a tattoo.

pretty crazy gear.. never seen that before! it is used in watches?
where are you getting it on your body?
go big!
my next one is going to be gigantic!
Chiken

hell yeah, get it on your entire back!
were are you getting your gigantic tattoo ap? since your back is already pretty much covered, i can't really think of any other place to get a gigantic tattoo.
phi_

The device is used to translate continuous motion into intermittent motion; naturally, it's most common usage is on movie projectors. It's also used on mechanical watches, but for a slightly different reason.
It's mainly to remind me of my way-too-intense love of movies as well as some realizations I've come to the past few months.
Anyway, I'm thinking of it being about 3-4" across on the inside of my left forearm, a few inches away from the wrist.

that sounds really cool! I say go for it. good placement too.
well i actually have quite a bit of room left on my back. the tree is fairly small and in the center, so i have all kinds of room on the sides. I am thinking about getting it on the side of my hip going up the side and a little bit on my stomach.
i'm going to work on doing a suit which sort of goes from 3/4 length arms to your shoulders but splits in the middle on the chest and goes all the way down to half way down my legs before the knees. I kind of want to do it japanese style.. i just need to find a good artist.

What appealed to you about putting your tattoo there? I'm curious as to why it's such a popular spot for men, but not so much for women (or at least not that I've seen)
tattoos should be placed around what the person wants to bring attention to.
in the case of men, it's usually biceps/arms/chest. with women, it's usually crotch/ass/back. yeah?
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
i tend to place tattoos where i feel like they need to be in order to sort of balance myself out..
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Placement had more to do with larger surface area than anything else. The fine lines and lettering made my brother and I (we got them matching) choose that spot.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
Placement has a lot of elements for me. It all depends on the size of piece, style, and where im lacking in ink.
so right now, I've got a tattoo on my chest and upper back, so I'm kinda feeling like the lower part of my upper boddy is a little to plain. Also, the tattoo on my chest in on the left side, so for my next tattoo I'm going to do a piece from just under my armpit to my hip and have it extend partially onto my stomach and back on my right side. Thus evening out the all upper body and right side barrenness.
I would put it on the mid/lower part of my back but thats reserved for the rest of my western mural I've got mapped out in my head.
Étrangère

> tattoos should be placed around what the person wants to bring attention to.
None of the guys I know with them have well-muscled arms, and some of them (for example: my brother) don't go shirtless or wear sleeveless shirts ever...I hate thinking someone would tattoo something on his/her body purely for others' enjoyment.
I put mine where I wanted to see it.
> in the case of men, it's usually biceps/arms/chest. with women, it's usually crotch/ass/back. yeah?
..You think "crotch" is in the top three? No way! Ass/back/shoulder blade, sure. I don't know any women with crotch tattoos. I think men far outweigh women in that area.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
> I don't know any women with crotch tattoos.
I do! Multiple women.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i think most men do it on the arm, especially for a first one, because it is one of the less painful places to get a tattoo and also because it's a place that is always/easily covered up as well as not being in a place that instantly draws attention.
by crotch, i meant within maybe 6" of the vulva. so this includes upper inner thighs, mound of venus, distal abdomen, and hips--basically hidden by the front of underwear. ass can be the back half hidden by underwear.
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
@ Chiken: oh. yeah, I suppose that makes sense.
@ phi_: lucky boy.
@ lucas: I don't understand your reasoning. Just because two areas happen to be covered by the same article of clothing does not mean they are the same thing. That's like saying your shoulders are your chest because both are covered by a shirt...
Is my hip my crotch? No...my hip is my hip.
what is a crotch? i guess i personally think it's the same as the groin area. if a crotch was just a hole between your legs, then not many people would have crotch tattoos. :)
i didn't mean that all of the hip is crotch area. i think of parts of the hip to be the boundary of the crotch.

like fucking mountains with a forest.........bear on it's hind legs roaring......and a moose. yeah that would be epic but expensive, although black and white no color.
also, i want a separator between the mountain scene and pin up girl. what im thinking is three blue roses, heavy black outline with a touch of gold in the center of the separator, and the rose stems black and white extending out to the edges of the pin up girl.

it's from an album called 'never mind the ballots,' carpetsmoker. the idea is that the electoral process is a poor means of changing anything and a good way to make people think they are changing something.
it'll just be a couple of inches wide probably. he's going to have to reduce the amount of whitespace in the middle in order to fit the fists and stuff without the ink bleeding together.
Right ...
Personally, I would be rather reluctant to tattoo a political statement ... What was that quote again? "Men's opinions change, except for the opinion that they are right" (Or something to that effect ... Maybe if I find a picture which symbolizes that I will tattoo it ...
Anyway, looks like a nice album in any case, it's on youtube I see (Listening now):

glad you found it on youtube, carpetsmoker :). I know what you mean about political statements, but this is something unspecific enough that I don't think my attitude toward it will change in my lifetime. electoral systems work for some stuff, but the idea that they can bring about meaningful change on their own is something I really don't buy and don't think I ever will. my passion for working on changing the world for the better via means outside of voting isn't something I think I'll ever lose, either.

i was cruising to work on the bike trail i usually take most of the way there... and I was under this like tunnel thing and not sure what happened, either I goofed or my chain came off, and I went a little wobbly. I thought I was gonna slam into some vertical metal bar fencing that i was right up next to... but i managed to come away from it... then I saw a pedestrian so I tried to straighten out... and that's when I slammed my hand / handle bars into the fencing flipping me and the bike sideways and sending my head first skidding to a halt in front of a fairly surprised but all together amiable mexican fellow.
I got up... found my chain completely off. Fixed that and rode on to work. Got to office and went to clean grease off my hand thinking... wow... not broken fingers... amazing. I am super lucky.
Then I took my gloves off and there was some blood and a lot of skin falling off as I washed my hands.
I went looking for a medical office on the base, and instead found a cafeteria worker whose pants were incredibly well stocked with band aids. I find that to be very disturbing, as I eat there regularly.
Anyways... it's been a fun morning.

Ok, what I meant was that's it's a consistent / regular system.
meter = standard, kilometer = meter * 1000, centimeter = meter / 100
gram = standard, kilogram = gram * 1000, centigram = gram / 100
etc, etc.
It's more pragmatic IMHO
(How did we get from tattoo's to measurement systems btw? This thread got a bit sidetracked).
yeah, the base-10 unit prefixes are decent.

it's only more pragmatic in a base 10 system. but base 10 itself is dumb.

Orwell:
Another thing I am against in advance — for it is bound to be suggested sooner or later — is the complete scrapping of our present system of weights and measures.
Obviously you have got to have the metric system for certain purposes. For scientific work it has long been in use, and it is also needed for tools and machinery, especially if you want to export them. But there is a strong case for keeping on the old measurements for use in everyday life. One reason is that the metric system does not possess, or has not succeeded in establishing, a large number of units that can be visualized. There is, for instance, effectively no unit between the metre, which is more than a yard, and the centimetre, which is less than half an inch. In English you can describe someone as being five feet three inches high, or five feet nine inches, or six feet one inch, and your bearer will know fairly accurately what you mean. But I have never heard a Frenchman say, ‘He is a hundred and forty-two centimetres high’; it would not convey any visual image. So also with the various other measurements. Rods and acres, pints, quarts and gallons, pounds, stones and hundredweights, are all of them units with which we are intimately familiar, and we should be slightly poorer without them. Actually, in countries where the metric system is in force a few of the old measurements tend to linger on for everyday purposes, although officially discouraged.
There is also the literary consideration, which cannot be left quite out of account. The names of the units in the old system are short homely words which lend themselves to vigorous speech. Putting a quart into a pint pot is a good image, which could hardly be expressed in the metric system. Also, the literature of the past deals only in the old measurements, and many passages would become an irritation if one had to do a sum in arithmetic when one read them, as one does with those tiresome verses in a Russian novel.
The emmet’s inch and eagle’s mile
Make lame philosophy to smile:
fancy having to turn that into millimetres!
I don't know if he's right, but it's about the most compelling case I've heard.

I'd say more like a charming 30%.
> There is, for instance, effectively no unit between the metre, which is more than a yard, and the
> centimetre, which is less than half an inch.
Well, there is a decimeter, which is 10cm. There's also the decameter, which is 10m.
The fact it's almost never used says enough on "difficult" it is to "imagine" something like 56cm or 5.76m.
When measuring volume, deciliter and decaliter is used much more often btw ...
As for the historical argument: I grew up with the metric system, and have no problem approximating the scale of imperial measurements. I don't know how many inch are in a feet, but I do know an inch is *about* 2.5 cm, and a feet *about* 30cm and that a person is *about* 5" 5' - 6" 5'
Also, the metric system is much less ambiguous. Especially in the past there have been a zillion different interpretations of the imperial system, and there are still some differences between regions.
As for base-10 vs base-anythingelse, as I mentioned before I would have thought that base-10 is somehow "hardwired" in our brains because of our 10 fingers, but I may have been wrong:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base_10#Alternative_bases
Historically there have been a number of non base-10 systems ... More research required but it seems that any base will do as far as our brains are concerned.
So yeah, let's switch. And let's switch to postfix notation too while we're at it.
