we have a workspace pictures thread, but no room pictures one!
I cleaned my room yesterday and got rid of a LOT of stuff I had been meaning to donate or just plain throw away.
here are a few pictures on
my flickr .

someone needs to clean! where'd you get that rackmount setup in your older apartment? that rules.
plants are crucial, bluet.
I've only gotten drunk like twice!
yeah, nny, where are the images?

Only firefox? I'm using camino...
granted that's still Gecko but why woukldn't it work in, say, safari?

M̮͈̣̙̰̝̃̿̎̍ͬa͉̭̥͓ț̘ͯ̈́t̬̻͖̰̞͎ͤ̇ ̈̚J̹͎̿̾ȏ̞̫͈y̭̺ͭc̦̹̟̦̭̫͊̿ͩeͥ̌̾̓ͨ
well it worked in safari last i checked but i did see some rendering problems in ie
it probably has to do with the embed tags i am using.
weird that it doesn't work in camino
> flash + firefox otherwise you get nothing.
ugh
I guess I just found on of the retarded web developers I was talking about in the other thread ...

Actually, I'm a unix sysadmin... I do most of my coding in C.
When it comes to web.... in all honesty... if you aren't using firefox and you don't have flash... you are doing something wrong.
So *YOU* decide what software *I* should use ...?
Sound like a certain large software company to me...
In any case, I don't have much of a choice since flash doesn't even run on FreeBSD.
nny
M̮͈̣̙̰̝̃̿̎̍ͬa͉̭̥͓ț̘ͯ̈́t̬̻͖̰̞͎ͤ̇ ̈̚J̹͎̿̾ȏ̞̫͈y̭̺ͭc̦̹̟̦̭̫͊̿ͩeͥ̌̾̓ͨ
it runs under linux compat mode. and why are you using freebsd as a workstation?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I use OpenBSD as a workstation. What should it matter what we use?
it doesn't, as long as it works for you.
i run windows because i don't want to try to emulate everything.
i prefer photoshop to gimp.
i want to use acrobat pro.
i prefer ms office to openoffice or abiword.
i want to use adobe audition sometimes.
also, the bsd's aren't super great at things like suspend or suspend-to-ram on my thinkpads.
nny
M̮͈̣̙̰̝̃̿̎̍ͬa͉̭̥͓ț̘ͯ̈́t̬̻͖̰̞͎ͤ̇ ̈̚J̹͎̿̾ȏ̞̫͈y̭̺ͭc̦̹̟̦̭̫͊̿ͩeͥ̌̾̓ͨ
the bsd's lack lots of key features....
openbsd for instance doesn't have an SMP kernel... or very up to date ports packages. so your dual core box... single core. and enjoy v1.0 on v2.9 software.
i mean don't get me wrong the BSD's are strong... I love their licensing agreement... beats the crap outta the gpl. And as far as production sql servers... freebsd is a golden god. openbsd has pf... which is the greatest firewall interface ever concieved by man.
It just seems to me... that as a desktop... linux would serve you vastly better.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
> It just seems to me... that as a desktop... linux would serve you vastly better.
And that is where we differ.
actually, i run openbsd with an smp kernel on my workstation. and the ports system really isn't that outdated

you are in denial. eventually it will pass.

the law is no protection
I meant that it did work in Camino, nestor :).
point 1: nny is using Flash on his personal website for some photo galleries. honestly, who cares? if it was like the website of a major bank that a lot of people needed access to or a government website to pay your taxes or something then by all means, whine as loud as possible about the use of Flash. but on a personal website, anything beyond "oh that sucks, I can't install Flash and can't see your photos" is taking the whole anti-Flash thing a little far.
granted, I hate these Flash image viewers and stuff as much as you do, but I don't think that calling someone retarded is really going to get you anywhere. complaining in a civilized way to Adobe so that they open up Flash or do whatever they have to do for a BSD version to exist might be a little more productive.
point 2: BSD is fine as a workstation! some stuff is a pain, like Flash and ACPI functions, but I think that as a web developer it is your responsibility to cater to your users, not the other way around. and if you are not going to cater to all users, I think that you should own up to it and take responsibility, like "as a web developer I have decided to use Flash, with the knowledge that it will not allow some users to view my content; and I am ok with that."
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
also, the ports/packages for OpenBSD-current are, last I used them, plenty up to date. and there really isn't much reason not to run -current on a workstation.
nny
M̮͈̣̙̰̝̃̿̎̍ͬa͉̭̥͓ț̘ͯ̈́t̬̻͖̰̞͎ͤ̇ ̈̚J̹͎̿̾ȏ̞̫͈y̭̺ͭc̦̹̟̦̭̫͊̿ͩeͥ̌̾̓ͨ
yeah uhm... banks use flash... and java... and while i hate java... it is utter irredeemable crap... flash is currently the best and by far preferred method for streaming video over the internets.
not even touching on flex applications...
flash is pretty much a bare essential in todays web browser market.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
it's a shame that there isn't a better streaming video solution. or Flash was able to be supported on the BSDs.
I'm just saying in the case of something like a bank, people would have more of a legitimate complaint, like, "I use a computer that can not use Flash websites and I am a customer of your bank. make your website work for me, you assholes, or I will take my money elsewhere." rather than "your personal website uses Flash and I can't see your photos."
I'm not complaining, just providing my opinion...
it runs under linux compat mode
Only flash 7, and pretty unstable at that ... In addition it doesn't work very well (Or not at all?) with Opera either.
and why are you using freebsd as a workstation?
Because I like it.
the bsd's lack lots of key features....
That's for me to decide, not for you.
I have been running FreeBSD as my desktop for almost four years, and it has always worked very well for me.
openbsd for instance doesn't have an SMP kernel
So? I don't have any multi-core machines (Also, I'm not an OpenBSD guy, but IIRC OpenBSD does have a SMP kernel, bsd.mp...)
It just seems to me... that as a desktop... linux would serve you vastly better.
Again, this is for me to decide, not you.
flash is pretty much a bare essential in todays web browser market.
No it's not, I never use flash, and I browse the web ...

ugh
I guess I just found on of the retarded web developers I was talking about in the other thread ...
sure, you offered an opinion, but it's lacking any justification and is essentially just name-calling. this post was just worthless, IMHO.
you are right about whose responsibility it is to cater to users, though. I think that if nny is using Flash, he should take responsibility for the lost viewers. at this point, it's his call whether or not he cares. if he doesn't, then that is his decision, and he goes on using Flash. either way though, I don't think that he should be telling you what to use, unless it is just a suggestion along the lines of, "Flash is becoming more popular and it might eventually become a reason for you to want to switch workstation operating systems."
a lot of hostility in here…
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
or maybe I should say "substance" instead of "justification." whether or not it's justified, I don't really care. the fact that it is nothing more than name-calling with no explicit reason is what makes it worthless.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
or maybe it's the fact that it's name-calling at all.

This could all be fixed with a Flash version, and an AJAX version or static implementation of the page.
Still, it's not like I'm going to be making a text based version of my sites.
The "retarded webdevelopers" was actually a reference to another post on another board (Yeah, I get confused sometimes) and not really intended as a direct assault towards nny ... Which was also the start of the flash petition thing.
http://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=1081#post7725
But yes, I do get frustrated, because flash is complete and utter crap, which has a large amount of problems (As I've outlined in the other thread).

actually since i intend to add flash video to the site... no... ajax can't play video.

Added some shots of my current apt in mountain view. But I keep a set of old apt pics.
What do you need all those machines for? Is that a 19` rack? wtf? Are you running Google out of your apt?
