Because we don't know what happiness is.

I don't think I necessarily try really hard to convince myself that I'm happy, I just try to figure out why I'm bummed out if I am.

but hey, being convinced you're happy seems pretty good to me.

Happiness is a moist cupcake on a spring afternoon.

Happiness is a blow job at triple digit speeds.

Happiness is lying on a sand dune in the middle of brazil looking up at the stars, trying to figure out whether or not you are going to die, or just wish you had by the following morning... man that was one hell of a party.

But when it comes to hypocrisies... I have this to say.

Do you like recieving blow jobs? Yes? Do you like giving them? No? HYPOCRITE!

=D

I think, "I think these thoughts. I do these things. I make this much money. I have these types of prospects... mustn't I be happy?"

Or is it just me marketing myself?

it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that you aren't living in a vacuum .

Trent: "meh, emotions are temporary illusions"

Emotions are temporary, but quite real for the one experiencing them. They may seem "illusionary," but they have a purpose: to let you know how close you are to overall well-being, a state which humans naturally gravitate towards and one meant to aid in the overall well-being of the universe. When something makes you feel terrible, you know it is not in alignment with your innate desire to reach your highest potential of existence. When you feel wonderful, whatever you are doing or thinking about/experiencing is in accordance to this desire. Your emotions are like a meter letting you know whether what you are dealing with is in your best interest or not. I think it is important to listen to them, but also important to realize that they function separately from thoughts, or you will end up going around in circles trying to understand them...
How you feel...
What you think about how you feel...
How you feel about what you think about how you feel...
What you think about how you feel about what you think about how you feel...

Not to mention how you think you should be feeling (often my particular problem).

No real conclusions using this method, obviously.

I also want to say that the main reason happiness is such a "problem" for humans is that we try to think about it rationally, define what it is, and fit into its criteria in order to have it. We have the capability to know what happiness is just by being conscious beings. All we have to do is feel it, accept it, believe we deserve to receive it, and let it fill us.

And I'm pretty sure I don't understand the idea of living in a vacuum, but I will read more about it.
