nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
:O

come september it looks like I might be heading out to kenya to help host a workshop and travel for 2-3 weeks. I am probably going to try and hit uganda and some of the kenyan countryside. anybody been that way? i could use some general advise (though I have a fair bit of travel experience I have never been to the dark continent).
coming out of bozeman montana, i will probably be stopping in amersterdam, giving myself a day to adjust to the time zones going in both directions. anybody got any hook ups in amersterdam who wouldn't mind chillin with a tired american?
do you have to go to amsterdam? if not, you can stay with me in norway. pretty sure it's the same time zone

I would like to see olso... I am not sure if amsterdam is fixed. as for couch surfing, I am not too concerned about finding a place to stay since the us government is going to be footing the bill. but if anybody is interested in visiting amsterdam for a day I should have an extra bed. i will know more in another month when the reservations are made
you mean oslo, right? i live an hour's train/bus ride away from oslo, so i might be able to show you around
:P yeah sorry

Things to keep in mind:
1. Don't drink tap water (obviously)...ever...
2. Don't buy pop in glasses; get them in their original bottles, and ask to open them yourself
3. Bathe in bug spray daily
4. Sleep with mosquito nets if possible
5. Don't walk in the grass at night (snakes, scorpions, spiders everywhere!)
6. Children will swamp you with cheap little things, but don't buy anything! Often the rejected kids will punish you if they see you giving money to someone else (I've been kicked and bitten before)
7. Don't eat super-unripe mangos unless you're ok with getting sores all over your lips (I've been known to consider them worth it :-P)
8. Avoid bus taxis at all costs. People constantly take chickens etc. with them so ticks/fleas abound
9. Ever get the urge to cook/bake? Sift your flour!!
That's all I can think of for now. You'll be fine. :-) Plus I know you've already been to places where you have to be careful of this stuff.
Ah! You're going to have such fun! Intensely jealous.
:) got it. beware of snakes, scorpions, spiders, chickens, mangoes, children and whatever critters hide in bags of flour. I think I can handle that.
hmmm...if things keep going this way my memories of kenya will be that of green grass and a comfy bed that I occupied all of the time.

greene
cursed, but the demons i confronted with dispersed
mmmmm... green grass and bed.......... never underestimate the fun you can have wasting a vacation doing nothing
yeah...nairobi I guess is a dangerous place...even long time residents here are wary of really mixing with locals...one of them calls it living a fake life in an artificial bubble...I guess relative to them I am not doing so bad.
greene, you are SO right
I am out of bed and things are looking pretty awesome! one highly productive night without sleep perhaps makes up for one day that I slept through
well...last night in africa. if anybody is wondering what countries to spend time in.
Kenya (I spent a little over two weeks there): it is a decent place to visit but security is an issue and things are very expensive and the cops are supper corrupt and Nairobi is pretty ugly. So sure, visit some of the great national parks but don't worry if your time is short.
Uganda (I spent two days) not much to say. Like kenya but poorer and perhaps a little less insecure though every security officer (and there is about three on each block) walks around with an automatic weapon if that means anything.
Ethiopia (Two days there): highly recommended. poorer than kenya but the people are just so much better. great food, beautiful women, verdant landscape, and you don't have to have security at you hotel!
