aka push-ups.
i know ap is doing this and i plan on starting in the next few days. i can do about 6 good ones +/- 1.
i'm going it because although i'm pretty strong, i'm not that strong for my size (6'3", 195-205lbs). as you can see i can't do many pushups..
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
can we make this thread the push-up motivation thread? every time I think it's a good idea to do these I do it for like two days in a row and then say "fuck it." I'm going to do some right now.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
ok just did ten. I can go upwards of twenty, but my head starts to feel like it's going to explode after ten or so.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
sounds good... here's my progress so far:
WEEK 1:
Test 1 - 14
Day 1 - 21
Day 2 - 24
Day 3 -
so i do it 3 days per week. M W F. for every day, there are 5 levels or tiers. usually goes from a high number of pushups to a lower number, then all out, with 90 second rests inbetween each level.. ex. lvl 1 - 10 , lvl 2 - 10 , lvl 3 - 8, lvl 4 - 6, lvl 5 - MAX.. so the number i put after day 1 is my MAX number. The program seems to be working alright. slowly but surely. i definitely feel the burn in my shoulders and on my sides. hooahhh!!!
as far as inspiration goes.. since i have moved to OR, people are way more accepting of folks going around town without a shirt on. so i like to get some sun at the local park. I have never really felt like i am very attractive until recently, I have been gaining some muscle mass and i like to show my tattoos. I would love to be able to lift heavier things, and it just feels good to have muscle mass.. i have been wanting to get some for a long time so i have some arms to put tattoos on. my arms used to be puny chopsticks. i guess i could use any kind of mass.. i have been a skinny fucker all of my life.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
yeah I am seriously lacking upper body strength in my arms and chest. I can ride my bike like sixty miles and be fine the next day and not even sore right after I do it, but ask me to lift something heavy with JUST my arms and it's pretty bad.
is there any logic to that approach, ap? I don't know anything about working out, I'm just curious how you thought of it.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
www.hundredpushups.com !
has the whole work out in pdf format up for download.
basically a 6 week program that gets progressively harder.
I don't really know much about working out either. i know that you should always take breaks (at least a day between) lifting (or in this case, pushing), because it takes time to build muscles. they need time to recuperate and build up stronger after being broken down. also just to eat somewhat healthy. I don't eat fast food any more and I rarely drink pop, or high fructose cornsyrup drinks. drink plenty o water and take time to meditate/breathe every day.
I wish i could ride a bike 60 miles in a day :p I can barely do the 2 or 3 mile cross-town venture without popping a lung on a tiny incline.
Well, the world record is 10,507 ... See keep going!
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
miles/day or pushups?!
push-ups ... Something to work towards after you've reached the 100 ;-)
Anyway,
My experience is similar to asem, I can walk or cycle many kilometers with little difficulty, but things like pushups etc. are a different story ... It's probably because I walk/cycle a lot, and do almost no lifting at all (Sometimes I lift a heavy computer ... but that's about it).
That's a nice site Andy ... I'm going to try following it ... I got 15 on the initial test (Which is about 14.5 more than I expected), I can feel my muscles ache, and I fear they will continue to do so for at least 24 hours...
same here CS, i have beasty legs and can pedal like a maniac but i can't even do ten pushups... thankfully i can build muscle mass quickly so i hope the pushup plan leads to some serious gains. i don't think i'll ever be able to do 100 though.
"I'll never be able to make it" ... You sound like some insecure housewife who's primary day activity is watching Oprah and Dr. Phil.
That's the wrong attitude ... Just think positive and go for it.
btw.
I had trouble lifting the cup of tea after I did the 15 push-ups earlier, woe is me ;-)
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
My initial test was 16, but I feel like I only made it that far because I'm incredibly fucking stubborn. Should I really start on level 3 if I felt like I was going to pass out afterwards...?
haha CS you're so aggressive
No, just trying to motivate you, you'll thank me later.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
nestor> so i hope the pushup plan leads to some serious gains. i don't think i'll ever be able to do 100 though.
CS> That's the wrong attitude ... Just think positive and go for it.
I think that's a perfectly fine attitude. He's not holding 100 as some goal post, but using the premise as a way to better himself--whether or not he makes it there.
i started the plan with an initial test (after working out earlier in the day) of 35 push ups. so i thought that i should start with week 5 column 3. so i did 40, 32, 30, 25 but maxed out at 20. i am not sure what the best approach is since i didn't land in the normal categories. one alternative would be to just add 20 or 30 to each quantity and start from week one. another could be to multiply the number of push ups in each period by a scalar say 1.5 or 2. any suggestions?
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
i think you guys may be interpreting the plan wrong
BEK say you did 16 on your initial test. now look at the week 1 chart. you would be doing the "more than 10 pushups" column. i think every one is supposed to start out on week one. it is a 6 week thing. so on day 1 week 1 you would do 10 PU's then rest, then 10 PU's then rest, the 8 PU's, then rest, then 6 PU's then rest, then as many as you can in a row. so then wait a day and then do day 2.
i could be wrong though i guess, because if you do an initial of 35, you probably don't want to be doing puny 10 pushup sets....
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
I'm doing the >10! It's gonna kill me! Let's go!
ap, yeah i just thought that if i spent four weeks doing easy sets that i might get lazy and not really increase my strength at all.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
am I reading the Week 1 chart wrong or something? I'm gonna do level 3 (15–29 pushups for < 40 years old) and I'm not seeing how this corresponds to the Week 1 chart. it seems like they're going by a totally different initial test that just uses 1–5, 6–10, and 10 or more pushups.
It doesn't correspond, from the page:
If you're concerned about your Rank in the extreme left column; there's no need. The scale of 1 to 7 is purely an indicator of current fitness, and can be used as a comparison tool between yourself, friends, family & co-workers.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
then wtf was the point of the initial test? they make it seem like it's going to determine something and then change up the ranges in the Week 1 chart. weird.
it does determine the column
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
they don't even have the 1–5, 6–10, and 10 or more categories on the initial test page. just seems stupid is all.
ok, i will start with week one as well.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
heres my week 2 report...

...so here is my all time record so far.
WEEK 1:

Day 3 - 16
WEEK 2:

Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down

DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
I'm gonna have to get in on this thread. I will do pushups tonight.

Drunk by Myself
I can't even do 5 pull ups. the most is like 2.

DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
We need some type of tracking software. you can enter pushups per day and it'll generate a nice graph!
You can do that with any spreadsheet application (i.e. excel).
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
Fuck Excel.
But yea, I want something with web access so we can compare. TTF-Press Up challenge
fuck excel is right
i live in that shit
Well, I could not remember how the
OpenOffice.org spreadsheat application is called ...
You can try Google docs ... I get a ``This web browser is not supported.'' message so I can't try/use it myself ...
google docs would be a smart way to go then everybody could contribute by sharing the document
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
ever since this website frustrated me I have not been doing pushups :(. that is a terrible excuse.
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself

asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
oh I was totally reading this program wrong. the levels are like, "sets" kind of. like you do 12, rest for a couple minutes, then 12, rest, 10, rest, 10. that's what it is for day two on the column I'm doing. let's see how I do…
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
oh, and today is technically day three but I forgot yesterday.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
well not "day three" from the program, just the third day. actually it's the fourth day from starting. oh god just disregard these last two posts, you get the idea.
:D

the law is no protection
I just rode home really fast on my bike and I am definitely not in the mood to do pushups. I have no discipline.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
so last week, i was able to do 30, but after a week of not doing them, i only squeezed out 21. pretty stupid how fast it goes down the drain :)
the 110 degree weather made me fucking lazy
i haven't even started yet, so don't feel too bad :)
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i didn't slack off! i even did em while i was on vacaction!!!!
asemisldkfj

Lol .. wow same here. Shit.
I am off about a week now but last time I did push ups 60,60,60,60,80
I think the trophy is gonna go to Fsmart.
fsmart did you do those in one day or one session?
one session
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
haha yeah, ill give the trophy to fsmart. I've been so busy with homework and what not that I have cut back quite a bit. I sitll do at least 3 sets of 20 a day.
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
fsmart. I'm gonna catch up!
asemisldkfj

i'm also doing situps :o
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
argh, no motivation for this. I'm scared I am going to get used to doing barely any physical activity and not being out of shape and then I will get older and not have that luxury anymore and be so used to not doing anything. fuck.
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
Yea I need to do this for the new year. Enough bullshitting.
Don't know how far you guys want to go into fitness, but tc showed me this awesome routine online and im currently starting week 3.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
i have not been doing press-ups, but i signed up for the ymca and have been working out every night for about 1 1/2 hours, and i feel awesome!
1.5 hrs? mucho, maybe too much.
really depends on how rigorous the workout is. You can workout all day if ya do it right and still have positive benefits.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
I feel great and i'm not rushing myself at all, so i think i'm good for now
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
i broke my record for running today! 2 miles solid! not much, but its up from 2 weeks ago when i could barely muster 1 mile.
and my biceps are bulging.... rawwwwr
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
go ap!
im actually kinda sad i don't work at fedex any more. im finding it so hard to keep up working out, but i do it anyways!
I rode for 2 hours while watching Blindness. Crappy movie but I felt so good after
you watched a movie while riding a horse?
perhaps it was a stationary bike
we'll see
ap are we going to get progress pics of your transformation?
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
i'm sort of slacking this week.. i'm in pain :/
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
so my room here in pittsburgh has the perfect setup to do incline push ups so i've been trying to do at least 1 set of 15 incline push ups every day.
kinda crazy how easy normal push ups are after doing inclined ones.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I haven't done a push-up since I last posted about it in this thread.
