my office computer has this annoying drive under "My Computer," and upon clicking it, it tells me to insert a disk. i always thought it was some stupid flash card reader or something. i finally looked, and i have an IOMEGA 250MB ZIP DRIVE.
legacy!
these dumb drives as still so expensive on newegg.com. i'm surprised that they are still for sale!
damnit, now i'm intrigued by a different style of backup medium.

aren't these things notoriously unreliable? they're cool in theory because floppy disks are badass, but kind of suck in reality compared to optical media.
yeah, but optical is prone to scratching and have a lifetime of about fifty years.

as long as you store optical media properly then the scratching is basically not an issue. given the prices and the reliability and the fact that data on a zip disk can be fucked up with a magnet, I'd trust some high-quality CD-Rs or DVD±Rs for backup any day. sucks that their lifetime isn't so great, but oh well.
make copies every ten years :)
Ever heard of the ``Click of death''?
Most ZIP drives are pretty cheap/low-cost, and can destoy ZIP disks.
If I had to choose between floppy disks and ZIP disks, then I'd go for floppy disks.
It's seriously deprecated in any case, flash disks are much cheaper, more reliable, and faster, not to mention better supported.
yeah, i've experienced the "click of death" many times personally. :)
flash media also has a relatively short lifetime, iirc.
solid state media with lifetime around 2 million hours is pretty great, though.

seriously! i was so surprised that newegg still sells them.
have you looked at tape drives? :)
not yet :)

Tape is madd expensive!
The thing is on a LARGER scale, tape really is the only way to go. I believe it has the least price/Gb ratio.
SSD's are something I'm REALLY looking forward to once the price comes down. I'm anxious to store a VMWare Fusion VM on one of these things.
