i ran osx on my desktop last summer.
it's time to do it again.
perhaps on my x60.
going down 28/08/2008
You mean the hacked version that can run on a regular PC?
yep

I dunno Nestor. choosing hardware that works is a bitch.
Also, there is an efi emulator that you can use. so in theory, you can run a vanilla kernel.
well i had everything working with a bit of hacking on my desktop
i popped in osx86 project yesterday and people are having better results with 10.5.2 - incl. power management which was the biggest thing stopping me from running it on my x60. the only problem is wireless, i need some atheros action.
oh, and i was dual booting xp.
i'm definitely going to do this again, i really liked it.
also i'm getting a huge monitor in the fall. so that will look sexy.
i may try to use an efi emulator, so i don't have to use one of those sketchy hacked kernels

yea. I dunno. But hey if it works, post a tutorial. I really want to buy a Mac Pro. That case is SO worth the money.
it looks like my desktop hardware is compatible - c2d, intel chipset, etc. i don't even have to worry about ide crap (which was a problem before) as i have a sata dvd drive.
so efi emulation + vanilla os x will be going down in about two weeks!
set up. perseus is running vanilla 10.5.2 darwin kernel 9.2.2 with efi v8.
ownage. pics of office space to come.
nice!

Nestor: So did you buy a copy of leopard?
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
if not, tell me where you got it and how I can get it ;).
i'm using kalyway 10.5.2, mainly for the drivers. i could now use a leopard dvd and install but there isn't much point now other than fork over cash to steve.
i need more flac support
i'm dying inside

Cog ...

(I think.)
cog looks good.
i'm a bit uncertain right now as to what i should do. i'm not entirely happy with the video card support in os x - i'm on a 7900gs and i'm having some odd frame rate issues in vlc. for some reason quicktime is having a hell of a time dealing with .mkvs that even run fine on vlc (perian installed).
i might just have to switch back to windoze.
I don't know about OSX, but I do know that retard OS called Windows can't even play a fucking video file properly no matter what I do.
The problems:
1) It's slow, even though it shouldn't.
2) scaling if fubar.
3) colors are fubar.
4) The video vibrates.
5) scaling/aspect ratio is fubar.
6) Endless search for codecs.
7) TV-OUT doesn't work properly.
I literally spent hours trying to get this to work properly ... I just gave up ...
Playing videos on FreeBSD:
mplayer -fs file.avi
And it ``just works'' (tm)
haha
vlc?
tried mplayer for windows?
mplayer for Windows works so-so, it's pretty slow, and using the commandline on Windows is just as much fun as getting assraped by a Klingon.
However, most of the issues remain no matter which video player you use, so it's a driver/OS issue.

Nestor, did you set OpenGL output?
mplayer for windows has a gui
what gatz?
DaGr8Gatzby

In VLC, you can set different output modules. Try all of them and see which one gives you the best performance.
ooh. very cool.
although i think i'm ditching os x for vista x64.. kill me now
things i like about mac:
- nice gui tools: drag and drop, etc.
- better colour management
- anti-alias everything, very pretty
- terminal cli
- easy window management with expose
things i like about windows:
- apps: xchat, eac, winamp? *needs flac*
- legit driver support
why do i want to switch to windows again?
yeah, i'm not going to switch. need to figure out how to run eac and perhaps switch to cog.
fuck drivers
Hmm, so basically OSX is the best of Windows (Broad hardware support, good GUI) combined with the best of UNIX (CLI, control)?
I'm somewhat ashamed to admit I never even tried OSX ...
> anti-alias everything, very pretty
they go overkill, unfortunately.
> best of UNIX (CLI, control)
i don't think there's a ton of control.
hardware support is pretty much nonexistent. i like the gui but i understand why many don't. gui is really a super-personal choice though.
and no, there isn't a ton of control. in fact, i think windows probably has more control.
ugh ... Maybe it's a good thing I never tried it after all then ...
yeah, you unix types wouldn't like it :)
i wish i was hardcore enough to be a bsder

I like BSD man. I just wish Flash would work. :( I also need poker apps. I have JUST NOW gotten Full Tilt running on my Macbook. More mac poker please.
nestor, you're sufficiently hardcore for bsd action!
dp, I have needs.
:P :D
oh and gatz isn't there unfree flash?
at least there was when i was rockin debian
i think i'd like bsd a lot, i like apt and isn't ports sort of like apt?
(sort of?)
adobe makes flash for gnu/linux, but not the bsds
Flash for FreeBSD:
http://daemonforums.org/showpost.php?p=13239& … stcount=60
It would seem that there is a good chance that adobe will release a FreeBSD build of flash player 10 somewhere in the next 6 to 12 months orso ... (There was also another post from Matt Olander from IxSystems somewhere hinting at this ... Don't remember where though).
Personally, I use wine with firefox + flash 9 if I
really need flash, which is almost never.
> i like apt and isn't ports sort of like apt?

Yes, and Capitalism is
sort of like Socialism.
IMHO ports work better ... But to be fair there are also people with other opinions on the subject ...
> adobe makes flash for gnu/linux, but not the bsds
Also for Solaris btw.
> oh and gatz isn't there unfree flash?
There's gnash and libswf, which work so-so ... I believe both can play youtube for example ... But it often doesn't work ...
IMO clive works better for youtube anyway (download & play with mplayer)
> Yes, and Capitalism is sort of like Socialism.
:P was half expecting something like that though :D
os x dies tonight
fun experiment
