all the cyberattacks that russia gets involved in are kind of bizarre

i'm guessing the us cyberinfrastructure is much stronger.

not really... look back to the days just before the attrition.org defacement archives went down for good. in the wake of that chinese fighter crashing the US spy plane by slamming into it...

basically US and chinese hackers went apeshit on each other for a couple weeks. something like 300 gov sites a day were broken into on both sides.

whenever anything like this happens you get to see a whole nother side to the internet.

honestly though I think I might agree with russia on this one. as bizarre as it sounds. and I am pretty sure the US is just posturing to protect its missile defense shield.

i just hope the georgians didn't think the us would stand up for them if russia went at them.

it's clear that russia can pretty much do whatever the hell it wants on that side of the world.

Petty squabbles ... Looking at stuff like this I feel just ashamed to belong to the same race as those people ... They should just kill each other.

don't be so judgmental, carpetsmoker. if you were born into the same circumstances as "those people," chances are you'd end up in much the same place they are in right now.

why do you agree with Russia, nny? I'm just curious, I'm not sure if I have a side here.

unless by "those people" you mean the politicians. they are welcome to kill each other.

methinks russia is just pulling the same card it has for centuries... imperialism. although georgia was really pushing it.

The actions of the georgian president are absurd. The guy basically launched a surprise attack on a civilian target on the eve of the olympic games.

Russia simply chose to recognize the independence of a neighboring nation, and protect them from georgia.

Going beyond that I would fault russia. But up until... they've done nothing wrong. They even attempted to contact the UN security council on the matter.

Also their peacekeeping force was attacked by georgians and destroyed. Technically... georgia fired the first shots. And now that they are getting their asses handed to them they are screaming for support from NATO who wants to put a missile defense system in their country.

Of course we are going to publicly criticize russia. We want a missile defense shield.

But in the end Russia isn't doing anything wrong just yet.

I thought it was still unclear who fired the first shots?

South Ossetia isn't a nation and I suspect that Russia has interests beyond "recognizing the independence of a neighboring nation."

with what end in mind did Russia try to contact the UNSC? everyone knows that unless the UNSC did something in the separatists' favor Russia could just veto it. attempting to contact the UNSC just doesn't seem like a manifestation of genuine concern for anyone's interests but their own. though I guess maybe it was a gesture of good faith in the sense that it showed they wanted to talk something out. I don't know.

I'm not so much defending Georgia's actions as I am questioning Russia's motives. and I think that they are more so worth questioning than Georgia's because Georgia has to be afforded some level of national sovereignty.

where is this stuff about a missile shield being built in Georgia? I knew we wanted one in the Czech Republic but haven't heard anything about one in Georgia. unless that would be part of them joining NATO or something.

Russia has been steering for this conflict for years, and they were gathering troops around Georgia's borders for months.

Russia ``protecting'' the ``Russian citizens'' is bullshit, it sounds like Caesar ``protecting'' the Gauls ...

Yeah I dunno about the mood of Ossetians...

But Georgia was shelling one of their own cities.

That's not acceptable ever.

If Darth Vader himself wanted to intervene on their behalf when nobody else would... i'd probably initially support that. Of course remain skeptical.

Lets face it, Russia is definitely pursuing their own interests. We know that. And we should remain skeptical of their actions. But I still can't just yet get past a country's military shelling a city in their own lands.

What exactly is the difference between bombing a foreign city or one of ``your own'' ...?

Well it's the difference between a valid war against an enemy, and oppression of your own people.

Countries exist to protect their people, and provide them quality of life. If that requires that they go to war with another country, so be it... that's acceptable. But once you are engaged in open warfare with your own people, the whole point has been completely lost.
