YES
EPIC FAIL
(what happened?!)
so i've been doing some work on my desktop and at some point it totally died.
on boot: blank screen, no signal. fans spin but of course BIOS and no speaker beeps on boot.
went through process of elimination, ran with just 1 stick ram, video card. tested vid card in another pc and it works fine. therefore i suspect it is either the cpu, mb, or perhaps the psu. i'm going to test the psu now.
anyone have any thoughts on what could be doing this?
oh the pirating
bummer.. i hope you figure it out.
the good news is that good hardware is cheap!
agreed but just dropped some serious cash on that huge panel :(
well it isn't the psu.
:. it is either the mb or the cpu. thoughts? i'm going to reseat the cpu but unfortunately i don't have any s775 cpus lying around.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
when you narrow it down the CPU or mobo it's kind of tough to do anything about it other than replace the part.
:(
at least it's not the hard drive.
yeah. i've reset cmos a few times, going to run it without cpu in and see if it goes to bios.
i think it is the motherboard, the damn northbridge heatsink was terrible anyway.
suggestions on a motherboard?
dunno, but the good news is one can be picked up for $50-75, hopefully.
i just go with intel anymore.
i'll have to do a bit of research as i'd like as much compatibility as possible with os x.
don't want to spend too much.
don't buy a via/sis chipset. they are such shit.
i found out last week that either my cpu or my motherboard is busted. or both. pretty much same situation as nestor
good deal on the ich9.
yeah it looks okay although only 4 sata :( :(
going to jury-rig some esata awesomeness
no boot
SHIT
it must be the cpu. one test and i'll know
might get a q6600
well got a q6600 too. works in the new mobo but not the old one?!?!
by this assessment both my cpu and motherboard failed at the same time. sketchy. more tests.
well cpu is dead for sure. tested in new mobo.
system up. q6600 + p5k. guess the giga + e6300 died together in a ball of magic smoke.
rest in peace, nestor.
and his successor, perseus, rises out of the ashes
intel q6600 2.40ghz (quad) - current at stock but not for long
asus p5k se
2gb g.skill pc6400 kit
nvidia 7900gs
muaha what a frankenstein
fuckin' phoenix
any warranty on the dead parts?
overclockin will kill whatever there was
damn northbridge on the giga 965-ds3 could heat a whole room
phoenix indeed <3
you're an overclocker? :(
> current at stock but not for long
obvs
but it's too bad that it died because of oc. you got what you deserved. :P
:O
you make me sound like a criminal!
yeah it was oc'd for a bit, nothing too extreme although last year i was really pushing it for a while. probably will only take this one to 2.6-2.8.
no, nothing like that... i just think it's a waste of time/warranty for a marginal speed increase.
now running 10.5.2, stock kernel with efi v8
have to do a bit of wiring before i get internet on this box but once i do it's going to be fierce
:D

Nestor: Screenshots man. Would you want to do Mac OS X development? My Epic fail didn't involve MY machine. I did this:
# rpm -e sqlite
^ This was a linux box. Never forget.
will do once i get the internet.. will also take some pics of my new setup. it is pretty nice, actual tower is in a closet-cabinet type thing so i can't hear the fans. yey 15' dvi cables

How is this an epic fail? You can just reinstall sqlite in a matter of minutes.
An EPIC fail wouild be something like wanting to type:
# pkg_delete gnome\*
But accidently typing:
# pkg_delete gnome \*
Note the space between ``gnome'' and ``\*''

Lol .. try removing SQLite remotely without an emergency disk available. :)
well my epic fail is doing okay now
perseus is probably getting a gtx 260 + a nice 2x2GB kit.
oh and raiding (1) my 250gb disks.
that's exactly what i ended up doing. the gtx 260 is HUGE.
Ugh, what a brilliant name ... No one is ever going to confuse that with the popular Geforce MX 200.
At Moosejaw, we're committed to making shopping as much fun as backpacking the Chilkoot trail or playing red rover. This morning, we didn't live up to that commitment when our site went down due to problems caused by our 5X Rewards Promo and high traffic volume.
Long story short, we've fixed the issue by removing the promo code. Now anyone who checks out WITHOUT entering a promo code will get the 5 Times Rewards Points when we process the order. The deal is still good until midnight PST, so if you missed it earlier today, there's still time.
Love the madness,

Shmoocon tickets sold out in under half a second, and then their servers promptly failed under load... 5 years and running... and they have yet to alter their ticket sales scheme. The amount of automated systems that buy up tickets and then attempt to ebay them is absurd... also absurd is that you can buy tickets at under cost day of the conference... and no one bothers to show up because of the lack of ticket availability.
Last year I fabricated badges... maybe I'll do that again this year if they are dumb enough to use acryllic again.
here's a worse fail:
www.rapidssl.com is down, so i can't renew my ssl cert. fucking sucks

that's pretty massive fail right there man.
it was back up within a few minutes. i know it wasn't just me because the retail website selling the cert couldn't contact the rapidssl server for csr parsing.
lenovo's website went down.
email subject: "Oops - the
Lenovo.com site is back up. We've extended Employee Pricing"
email body: "Due to overwhelming demand, our website encountered problems. To make it up to you, we've extended our sale through Wed 12/2 so you won't miss out on Cyber Monday deals..."
