the law is no protection
I really wanted my copy of The Economist before leaving town for a few days tomorrow and my roommate with the mail key is gone until tomorrow night! I figured the mailbox lock couldn't be that tough to pick (for a first time!) so I gathered up some tools and went at it.

I found an old mailbox lock that had been replaced sitting in my entryway so I brought that up to my room to study a little bit. it looks pretty simple; I could see the pins inside and thought I could find something to fit in the lock to turn the cylinder. turns out a really tiny allen wrench worked nicely for the pins and a tiny flathead screwdriver fit in there to turn it.

so I brought my makeshift lockpicking kit down to the mailbox, and three or four minutes later I had my Economist! this was probably one of the coolest things I've done in my life so far.
