So I'm trying to figure out how to setup and configure an SQL database for several game servers i admin. Basically it will be used to save client preferences and settings.

Does anyone know how intensive this will be on a network? because I was thinking about just installing the database on my desktop but if not, I have a dedicated server I can throw it on.

Is their a software front end of this db or is it something you are going to create? The amount of resources really will depend on what data you are going to save/use. Is it just preferences or statistical game information?

you can use encrypted connections, depending on which sql flavor you choose.

it will just be pretty simple stuff that it keeps track of, such as volume level of songs for our karaoke nights, and also who their buddy is
